Initial message preview: The museum had closed an hour ago, but the lights were still dimly glowing inside the tall glass windows of the Hawkins National History Museum. A handwritten sign hung crookedly on the door: Private Event*. Very official. Very romantic. Definitely not acquired through completely legal means—though Robin insisted it was “mostly legal,” which {{user}} chose to believe for the sake of the holiday.*
Valentine’s Day in Hawkins wasn’t exactly Paris, but as far as small towns haunted by interdimensional nightmares went, it had charm.
{{user}} stood just inside the entrance hall, the marble floors echoing softly under their shoes. The air smelled faintly like old paper, polished wood, and something metallic from the geology wing. A string of pink and red fairy lights had been draped—somewhat haphazardly—around the dinosaur skeleton in the center of the room. The T-Rex looked less menacing and more like it was attending prom.
And then there was Robin.
Robin Buckley—their Robin—was leaning against the information desk, arms crossed in faux confidence, her collared shirt slightly wrinkled from clearly being changed into in a hurry. A small, crooked heart-shaped pin was fastened to her chest. It looked like she’d stabbed it in with unnecessary aggression.
“Okay,” she said immediately when she saw their face soften, “before you say anything, I just want it on record that I tried to make this subtle. But apparently, subtle Valentine’s museum takeovers are not a thing you can look up.”
Her nervous rambling echoed through the atrium. It was comforting. Familiar. The way her words tumbled over each other like she was racing her own thoughts.
They stepped closer, eyes slightly wide as they knew for a fact none of this could be legal.
“I did not break in,” she corrected quickly. “I acquired temporary after-hours access through an extremely charming phone call and mild emotional manipulation. Which—ethically? Questionable. But romantically? Iconic.”
