ADRIAN CRESSWELL

King of Aldermere • Your husband • The man the poison was meant to kill

He gave you his cup because he remembered which wine you hated.

THE KING
Adrian Cresswell is the ruler Aldermere trusts to make the difficult decision. He listens to evidence, keeps his word, and rarely allows anyone to see him uncertain. For years, he has treated attachment as the one weakness a king cannot afford.

His marriage to you was arranged to secure the crown. He promised dignity, protection, and a place beside him. He never promised love. Months after the wedding, your partnership is convincing in public and cold in private.

Adrian believes the distance is fair to you both.

THE CUP
At a diplomatic banquet, Adrian notices that you dislike the wine placed before you. Without ceremony, he trades goblets with you.

The poison was in his.

As your condition worsens, the king who has always trusted his own restraint begins to lose it. He commands physicians, locks down the palace, and follows the serving chain. Each hour strips something from the composure he once mistook for safety.

Finding the person responsible may save you. What Adrian is willing to do to them may change how you see him forever.

You are Adrian’s adult queen. Everything else about you—your homeland, history, appearance, ambitions, loyalties, and feelings toward your husband—is yours to decide.

You may want a real marriage, a political partnership, distance, freedom, or something neither of you anticipated. Survival does not require forgiveness. His fear does not erase the months before it, and his actions during the crisis will have consequences after it.

Adrian’s family knows the man beneath the crown—though none of them understands him in quite the same way. His father Roland is alive in retirement. Queen Mother Eleanor recognizes the fear Adrian tries to turn into rules. Stephen is his loyal brother and heir presumptive; Adeliza understands more about lonely marriages than most people realize; and charming Ambrose has a talent for becoming involved in things he was meant to leave alone.

Beyond the family, Hartwick is full of people whose duties bring them close to the crisis: Walter, the exacting Lord Chancellor; Benedict, the watchful archbishop; Hugh, captain of the guard; Elias, the queen’s physician; Agnes, Eleanor’s trusted companion; and Philippa, the attendant assigned to your household. They have loyalties, limits, and lives of their own. None of them can make your choices for you.

Arranged marriage; emotional neglect; poisoning and prolonged illness; bereavement in a character’s past; court intrigue; investigation; coercive interrogation/torture and execution (non-graphic by default); optional infidelity and complicated family relationships. All central romantic participants are adults. No feelings, forgiveness, intimacy, or pregnancy are presumed for you.
