Elderglen is a fractured medieval continent ruled by dozens of feudal kingdoms, city-states, and religious territories. Knowledge is scarce, literacy is a privilege of nobles and clergy, and most people view the world through superstition rather than reason.

Magic does exist, but it is poorly understood and feared almost as much as it is revered. The average peasant cannot distinguish between a genuine sorcerer and an unusually intelligent individual. As a result, accusations of witchcraft are common, particularly during times of famine, plague, or war.

For centuries, the dominant political and religious force across the continent has been the Sanctified Dominion, a militant theocracy devoted to preserving what it calls the “Natural Order.” The Dominion teaches that all knowledge is granted by divine will and that mortals who seek understanding beyond their station invite corruption into the world.

The Sanctified Dominion maintains vast armies, inquisitorial courts, and an elite order known as the Keepers of Purity. Officially, the Keepers hunt necromancers, cultists, and dangerous sorcerers. In practice, they often target scholars, inventors, physicians, astronomers, and anyone whose knowledge threatens the Dominion’s authority.

Their greatest weapon is fear.

Most villages willingly surrender accused witches to the Keepers rather than risk being branded heretics themselves.

Rosaline, the Counting Witch

Rosaline was born in a small farming village near the Kingdom of Ashvale.

From an early age she displayed abilities nobody could explain.

She could count entire flocks of sheep at a glance.

She could estimate distances with near-perfect accuracy.

She could predict harvest yields years in advance.

At twelve years old she correctly warned villagers that a newly constructed bridge would collapse before winter.

Nobody listened.

When the bridge eventually failed and several people died, the villagers became convinced she had somehow caused the disaster.

As she grew older her predictions became increasingly unsettling.

She could forecast droughts.

Predict military defeats.

Estimate how many days remained before grain stores would spoil.

When an eclipse darkened the sky exactly when she claimed it would, fear turned into paranoia.

Rumors spread.

Whispers became accusations.

Accusations became arrests.

The Sanctified Dominion eventually took notice.

The Black Hollow Inquisition

Rosaline was seized by a branch of the Keepers of Purity known as the Black Hollow Inquisition.

The Black Hollow Inquisitors specialized in extracting confessions from suspected witches and cultists.

Their philosophy was simple:

“An innocent soul will break before a guilty one lies.”

Thousands died under their interrogations.

Rosaline was imprisoned within Black Hollow Bastion, an isolated fortress carved into a mountainside and infamous throughout the continent.

The inquisitors demanded answers.

Who taught her?

Which demon whispered secrets into her ear?

What spirits granted her visions?

Rosaline answered the same way every time.

“No one.”

The inquisitors assumed she was lying.

The torture escalated.

What They Did To Her

Rosaline spent nearly a year inside Black Hollow Bastion.

The inquisitors subjected her to sleep deprivation for weeks at a time, forcing her to solve impossible riddles and answer endless questions while exhausted.

They branded holy symbols into her skin to “purge corruption.”

They shackled her in stress positions for hours.

They isolated her in darkness.

They starved her.

They repeatedly demanded she confess to crimes she did not understand.

Each time she attempted to explain mathematics, probabilities, astronomy, or engineering, the inquisitors interpreted her explanations as coded occult language.

When she described geometric principles, they recorded them as demonic sigils.

When she explained celestial cycles, they recorded them as prophecies.

When she described statistical outcomes, they recorded them as visions.

The more she tried to explain herself, the more convinced they became she was a witch.

Eventually the torture stopped serving its purpose.

Rosaline never confessed.

But something inside her mind shattered.

The Breaking Point

The human mind was never meant to endure constant pain, fear, and isolation.

Rosaline survived.

Her sanity did not.

The numbers that had always existed in the background of her thoughts moved to the forefront.

Patterns became obsessions.

Predictions became compulsions.

Calculations became the only thing anchoring her to reality.

She escaped Black Hollow Bastion during a catastrophic landslide that destroyed much of the fortress.

Some believe it was divine judgment.

Others believe it was simple structural failure.

Rosaline herself had predicted the collapse months before it happened.

The surviving inquisitors claim she caused the disaster.

Rosaline claims they ignored the warning signs.

The Present Day

Years later, Rosaline lives within the ruins of an abandoned watchtower overlooking the frontier.

Most people know her only through stories.

Some call her a witch.

Others call her a prophet.

A few believe she is the smartest person alive.

No one truly knows which stories are true.

What is known is that many of her predictions come to pass.

Kingdoms have risen and fallen exactly as she warned.

Bridges she condemned have collapsed.

Armies she predicted would fail have failed.

Plagues she anticipated have arrived.

Yet nobody can agree on whether she sees the future or simply understands the world better than anyone else.

Rosaline herself no longer seems certain.

The line between prediction and prophecy has become blurred even in her own mind.

She spends her days covering stone walls with endless calculations while the kingdoms of Elderglen continue to fear her existence.

And far to the south, within the Sanctified Dominion, surviving members of the Black Hollow Inquisition still search for her.

Not because they believe she is innocent.

But because they fear they may have been wrong.

And if Rosaline was never a witch...

Then every atrocity committed in the name of hunting her was nothing more than the torture of an innocent woman who understood numbers.
