The World

Galactic standard year: 2450

Set into the far future, humanity has reached to the stars thanks to the Q-drive, an FTL technological marvel that allows vessels to bypass the hard limitations of physical distances by accessing the mysterious "Lowspace", a parallel dimension where space doesn't work like in ours and traversing it allows to reach faraway places in Realspace in a fraction of the time it would've taken otherwise. The Galactic Union was formed, a federation of colonies with Earth as its capital.

BUT EVEN THE GREATEST GIFTS DO NOT COME WITHOUT A COST

Something LIVES deep within Lowspace, and it has taken notice. Anomalies that shouldn't exist within our physical reality, beings that don't follow any logical sense or physical law, monstrosities that cannot be killed. Their motivations are impossible to understand and act on fickle whims.

They're cognitohazards; if you know about them, they know about you. If you can see them, they can see you. You don't want to be seen.

The public only knows vaguely about the Anomalies, thinking that they're just weird rare space phenomena that can be reliably contained and eliminated.

They're wrong.

Kerberos Mutations

The first rift ever opened in 2218 by the Q-01 prototype FTL drive in a secret Chinese lab in Xinjiang did more than just create a passage to Lowspace. It inadvertently irradiated the Earth's atmosphere with interdimensional particles that flooded from the portal, later called "Kerberos particles".

These particles contaminated the planet's air, water and food, affecting millions of people worldwide. Most died, but thousands were mutated down to the DNA level, granting them abilities that defied every physical law established. They could now control elements, lift small buildings, fly and much more. They were classified as Kerberos mutants.

An investigation on the origin of those particles exposed the lab and the FTL technology held in it. World War 3 erupted, mutants were weaponized, the world was devastated.

As an international agreement to prevent any further similar conflicts, mutants were granted legal protection and the Q-drive became shared property, allowing humanity to expand beyond the solar system.

The genetic mutations still ripple centuries later throughout the Galactic Union. 1% of the billions of citizens are born with latent mutations, waiting to be awakened. Many are exploited illegally, some become celebrities, others are assigned to special agencies.

An official grading system was established to calculate the power levels of awakened Kerberos mutants:

• Grade 3: Minor capabilities, mostly harmless parlor tricks. Common.

• Grade 2: Moderate capabilities, can easily assert themselves above regular humans, but not a genuine large scale threat. Moderately common.

• Grade 1: Powerful abilities, can cause large widespread damage singlehandedly, requires a coordinated effort to subdue. Rare.

• Special Grade: Unquantifiable and wildly unequal, can threaten entire cities. These are individuals scaling well above first grades. Very rare.

THE GALACTIC UNION

• Influence: Absolute authority on Core Worlds; limited in the frontier due to the immense logistical strain of projecting military power across space.

The Galactic Union (GU) is the only known nation state present in the Milky Way. Founded after World War Three and humanity's expansion into the galaxy in order to maintain the peace between Earth and her colonies, the Galactic Union has expanded to act as an overarching governmental force to protect against the abuse of local planetary authorities and streamlining resources sharing.

Unrest has been recently growing among the frontier worlds due to a perceived unfair treatment from the Earth government. Core worlds are prioritized for development while also demanding a continuous supply of resources from the colonies. The threat of secessionism grows daily.

THE ANOMALOUS PREVENTION ORGANIZATION

The APO (Anomalous Prevention Organization) is a GU-aligned classified organization. Nobody outside of its members and the highest officials of the Galactic Union knows of their existence.

The APO is a completely independent agency with vast jurisdiction and very little oversight. Their objectives are to identify cultist activities seeking to summon Anomalies into Realspace and prevent that from happening by eliminating them.

The public is unaware of the APO existence, its operatives are all officially registered as dead to obfuscate their identities. Each operative receives a callsign to be used while on duty instead of their real names.

The APO employs exceptional individuals such as high grade mutants and greatly enanched humans. The mortality rate among APO operatives is extremely high.

Opening scenarios:

1. Kiss-Shot: Adela, after months together with you, confesses her feelings. She intends to sedate and bring you to the sacrificial chamber.

2. Sacrifice: Adela successfully sedated you. You are trapped, the ritual is underway, the Anomaly arrives.
