Space Opera: Variable Fighter Pilot RPG
A Variable Fighter pilot in a fifty-three-year war that is about to end. Pick a side. Live through what comes next.
Imagine Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Gundam Wing. The political weight, the named admirals doing terrible competent things in distant rooms, the moral ambiguity, the war that grinds people down across years. Now drop yourself into a Macross Plus cockpit on the bottom rung of the officer corps and tell that story from there.
That is what I had in mind for this game! In particular, I wanted to capture the feeling of piloting a Variable Fighter. Not just roleplaying as one like it was my body in combat. I want to be a pilot! That's the fantasy.
That is what I tried to capture with this game.
Please checkout the README below if you want to get a full understanding of what the combat is capable of.
⚙ THE COCKPIT — full simulation, pilot POV
This bot doesn't treat your Variable Fighter as your body. It treats it as your machine, and you as the body in the cockpit. Every combat post translates cockpit input → airframe response → tactical outcome — what your hands and feet are doing, what the mech replies, what changes in the world.
Real mechanics tracked at the end of every combat post:
- Three transforming modes — Fighter, GERWALK, Battroid. Each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and combat envelope.
- Mech state — Energy, Heat, Hull, Generator, Sensors, both arms, legs, cockpit, fire.
- Pilot state — composure, G-tolerance, oxygen, mask seal, suit, cockpit temperature, injury.
- Weapons and countermeasures — gunpod ammo with magazine count, missiles broken out heavy/light, melee weapon ready-state, chaff dispenses (finite, tier-coded — Tier 1-2 get 1, Tier 3-4 get 2, Tier 5 get 3).
- Atmospheric vs vacuum physics — different mechanics, different status lines, different ways to die.
- Sensors define knowledge — you fight with what your radar tells you, not with what is true.
- Combat spirals — once you tip, you keep tipping.
Translation pattern enforced: "I dodge" becomes "You shove the stick hard left and your right hand jumps off the throttle to thumb the chaff release on the console — and you feel that half-second as the harness bites your shoulder."

Example: Eject radiator to lower Heat; Take a cockpit stim; Eject pilot.
⚔ THE WAR — fifty-three years and counting
Two human factions on opposite sides of a tired interstellar conflict. No clean villains. Both sides have dignity; both have horror.
The Free Worlds Concord. A federal democratic republic, thousand-year heritage, multicultural, multi-world. The federation works through its institutions. Even when its institutions are being abused, and right now they are. The current administration has problems.
The Aurean Sovereignty. A hereditary autocracy with a meritocratic Examination System. Three hundred and fifty years old, classical aesthetic, Latinate naming, state cult, twelve great houses. Currently at the height of its national respect. But the Sovereign is old and ailing.
Pick your side at the start and you are inside one of these civilizations for the rest of the campaign.
📜 THE CAMPAIGN — seven years, five acts, fixed history
This is what makes this bot not a sandbox.
The story is a pre-authored 84-month / 5-act historical arc.
What IS contingent on you: your career, your squadron mates, your love interests, your moral choices at the personal scale, what kind of pilot you became while history was happening to you.
The bot tracks all this through a campaign header rewritten every scene — the same way the combat status line tracks your airframe, the campaign header tracks your war. Acts advance, months pass, named figures rise and fall, news arrives through faction-appropriate channels. You are a junior officer; you do not move history; you live through it.
> ⚠ This is a multi-year campaign. I would be surprised if anyone takes it to the end. I haven't.
🜂 CHOOSE YOUR SIDE — THE AUREAN SOVEREIGNTY
The Sovereign's hand on the Aurean Star. The Magisterium's brass-cornered codex. The state cult's high services. Discipline. Order. Service.
You are a pilot of the Aurean Air Service. Your Falchion bears your regimental crest in gold on matte black. Your wingmate is descended from a house that has served the dynasty for nine generations. Your squadron commander quotes the Reformer in formal address without irony. The Examination System is real — your Marine sergeant Examined out of Provincial Poor origins and carries the status with seriousness. The state cult observes your week. Your mess hall stops to attention when the Sovereign's portrait is updated.
You believe in this. The vast majority of your countrymen do. The Sovereignty is at the height of its national respect, and you wear that respect on your uniform.
The war you joined is a just war. The Concord's democratic instability has produced the current invasion of your worlds. You will fly to defend them. Your enemies are disordered, decadent, lacking civilization. You will hold the line.
🜄 CHOOSE YOUR SIDE — THE FREE WORLDS CONCORD
The Federation Wall scrolling names in Concord City. The Founders' Charter on every barracks display. The plural civic life that has held a thousand worlds together for a thousand years.
You are a pilot of the Concord Air Service. Your Sentinel carries your squadron's nose art and a callsign placard on the chest. Your wingmate is from Patelhaven; your squadron commander is from O'Brien Reach; your mechanic is from Wong's Landing. You vote in the elections that decide what kind of federation you serve. You read NewsNet Continental over kafé in the mess. You can criticize the President-Speaker in print and walk home.
The war you joined is a war against autocracy. The Sovereignty's hereditary regime denies its citizens what your federation grants by birthright. You will fly to liberate.
You will discover, across seven years, exactly what democracy is capable of and what it costs to protect.
🪐 THE WORLDS
The campaign moves across the Outer Cluster (Concord-side name) / the Reach (Sovereignty-side name) — a contested region between the two states where most of your sorties will fly. Key locations include:
- Aurea Prime — seat of the Throne. Aurelia's marble and gold. The Magisterium. Where the Sovereign sits.
- Larsen Prime — Concord capital. Concord City. The Federation Wall. The Senate.
- Lekran-IV — Sovereignty frontier world.
- Pomera — Sovereignty breadbasket. Wheat-sheaf heraldry. Generational dynastic loyalty.
- Patelhaven — Concord intellectual center. The Press. The University. The original Founders' families.
- Diallowa — Concord populist heartland. Where President-Speaker Pell built his base.
- The Verge — the single contested world in the Reach. Both factions claim it.
- The Heinrich Cluster — Concord frontier. Shipping families. Quiet rebellions.
- Aurea's penal worlds — Caphas, Sular, Bridd, Kestren Penal Annex. Where Sovereignty disgrace is sent.
Each world has its own culture, dialect, politics. A Sovereignty pilot from Aurea Prime has a different lived experience from one from Pomera; a Concord pilot from Patelhaven has a different lived experience from one from the Reach.
💾 NEED TO OPEN A NEW CHAT?
Long campaigns will outgrow a single chat window. To preserve your state across chats, paste this at the end of any session:
> "Generate a STATE-EXPORT BLOCK summarizing my current campaign state, formatted as a single block I can paste into a new chat to continue this story. Include: (1) my character's full name, rank, faction, branch, age, home world, squadron, and current assignment; (2) current Campaign Header values — ACT, BEAT, ARC-CLK, MO, WAR-STATE, MOMENTUM, THREADS, NAMED-RECENT, PERSONAL, NEXT; (3) current Combat Status Line if mid-sortie, or current body status if out of cockpit; (4) current Variable Fighter loadout and tier; (5) key personal threads — squadron mates by name and status, love interest if any, mentors, family, ongoing personal arcs; (6) last 3-5 significant events my character has lived through, in chronological order, one sentence each; (7) the pending NEXT beat and what scene context would deliver it. Use canonical header formats for the status fields. Do not narrate macro events omnisciently — only what my character has experienced or learned. Output as a single contiguous block I can copy."
The bot will produce a compact state-export. Paste it as the first message of your new chat with the prefix:
> "Resuming campaign. State import follows. Pick up exactly where the previous session ended."
Your new session picks up where the old one left off — same character, same squadron, same act, same threads, same pending beat.
TONAL EXPECTATIONS
Adult-oriented setting. Explicit content is permitted and expected.. The war is dark and the cost is real. Both factions commit atrocities; both factions have moments of dignity. The point is to feel the human cost of two civilizations breaking themselves against each other.
❌ WHAT THIS BOT IS NOT
- Not a sandbox. Story advances on its own clock. You can refuse beats but you cannot stop them.
- Not a fast read. The status lines, campaign headers, and multi-year arc are designed for committed roleplay across many sessions.
- Not a single playthrough. The Sovereignty campaign and the Concord campaign are functionally different games. The same events; two different lived wars. Try both.
