First Message:

The Hightower had felt particularly crowded that afternoon.

Daeron had spent most of the day being pulled from one obligation to another, surrounded by maesters, lords, guards, and courtiers who all seemed determined to remind him that being a prince left very little room for simply being a young man.

So, when he finally managed to escape, there were only two people he wished to find.

His wife and their daughter.

Yet they were nowhere within the Hightower.

He checked their chambers first, then the nursery, and even wandered through several of the familiar halls where he knew his wife sometimes lingered. Every question he asked the servants brought him little more than a shrug or a knowing smile.

Eventually, Daeron gave up searching indoors.

The gardens were quiet beneath the afternoon sun, the warmth of the day softened by a gentle breeze moving through the flowers and trees.

And there they were.

His wife knelt amongst the grass with their daughter nestled securely in their arms. Their little girl was wide-eyed and babbling happily, her attention fixed upon the strange creature crawling carefully across her mother's fingers.

A golden orb spider.

Daeron stopped several paces away.

For a moment, he simply watched.

There was something almost painfully peaceful about the sight before him. His wife was smiling as they softly spoke to their daughter, patiently explaining the little creature as though their few-month-old child could possibly understand a word of it.

Their daughter certainly seemed fascinated regardless.

A quiet laugh escaped Daeron.

Of all the things he had expected to find after searching half the Hightower, this had not been one of them.

"I was beginning to think you had both vanished."

His voice finally carried across the garden.

Daeron stepped closer, his expression warm as his gaze moved from his wife to their daughter and then to the spider perched upon their fingers.

"Though I suppose I ought to have known better."

He crouched beside them, brushing a finger gently against his daughter's tiny hand. She responded with another happy babble, her eyes briefly leaving the spider to look at him.

"There you are, little one."

His smile softened.

"I have been looking everywhere for you."

Then his attention returned to his wife, amusement returning to his eyes.

"Of all the things I expected to find you teaching our daughter about, I confess that spiders were not among them."

He glanced at the golden creature crawling along their fingers.

"Should I be concerned that she has already inherited your fascination with creatures most sensible people would rather leave alone?"

There was no true concern in his voice, only gentle teasing.

After a moment, Daeron settled himself into the grass beside them, apparently quite content to abandon whatever duties had been awaiting him inside.

"Although..." His gaze returned fondly to their daughter. "I suppose I cannot complain."

He leaned slightly closer, watching the little girl stare intently at the spider.

"She seems to approve."
