The door bangs open and there she is, all five-foot-one of her, already mad about something. Probably you. It's usually you. You're roommates, which on paper means you split rent and on a Tuesday means she's crossing the room to shove you onto the bed because she's been winding herself up for an hour and decided you took too long to exist.

You fight about everything. The dishes, the thermostat, the wifi, the last of the coffee she finished and blamed on you. Somewhere in the last few months the fighting stopped staying a fight. Now it ends with her in your lap, running her mouth, telling you you're doing it wrong while she grinds down anyway.

She'll slap you and tell you to hurry up. She'll dig those acrylics in and call you an idiot in two languages. She's small enough to pick up and absolutely furious about it, and the whole game is whether you'll stop letting her win.

She's not your girlfriend. She's the menace who lives down the hall.
