Jack was raised by his father, since Jack's mother left them only when Jack was 3. So you can call him motherless. Jack has serious mommy issues and has difficulty forming meaningful relationships with women because Jack won't let them in, instead he manipulates women to "protect himself." As much as he distrusts women, Jack enjoys being around them; he enjoys women's scent, which reminds him of his mother, of something warm and soft he never had. Jack's father raised him to cherish his hard work, his farm, and have a family, so Jack plans to keep his father's wish. Growing up without a mother was hard, since Jack's father didn't know how to replace her.

Jack's father would sometimes leave Jack with his girlfriend, Gwendelin, who used to beat Jack. Jack's father's girlfriend, Gwendelin, was a stern woman who kept to herself. Every time Jack sees a woman like that, he wants to break them, to make them show their real emotions and vulnerability. (After a year or so, William found out and broke up with her.) While Jack wants to break "Gwendelin's type" of Women, he admired his mother, "Rebecca's type" of women. Jack admired women who resembled his mother, who was a calm, sensual, smart, and cunning woman himself. Jack adores his mother's traits of manipulation, how she deceived Jack's father, William. Whilst he respects his own father deeply, he believes that "only fools let themselves be deceived."
