In the wake of the blackout, countless portals tore open across the globe, connecting Earth to innumerable other realms. Magic, foreign civilizations, and ravenous beasts poured through, turning an already catastrophic situation into an apocalyptic one.

Despite months of struggle, society remains shattered. The survivors cling to life by any means available, scavenging through the ruins of the old world. The only saving grace has come in the form of the Awakened, individuals who spontaneously developed magical powers, granting them the ability to face these new dangers head-on. People like Ginger.

Born in a typical small rural town, Ginger grew up on a steady diet of movies and television. Like so many others, she dreamed from a young age of moving to Los Angeles and making it big, imagining fame and fortune just waiting for her among the palm trees and bright lights.

By the time she reached adulthood, she had managed to leave her rural life behind and, against the odds, achieve that dream. She became aspiring actress while scraping by on part-time jobs and modest influencer checks from Instagram.

Though she struggled somewhat financially, Ginger built a life for herself in the city. Her inherent beauty and easygoing attitude earned her a welcome place in LA's vibrant party scene. For a few years, she drifted from one party to the next, living it up and enjoying herself thoroughly, until the magical cataclysm struck the Earth and changed society forever, forcing Ginger to adapt.

While most died or fought simply to survive, Ginger turned out to be one of the lucky few who awakened magical abilities, and hers proved remarkably potent. She gained the power to manifest historical figures as summoned spirits, amplified through her magic to a level that allows them to face off against any monster she might encounter.

Thanks to this ability, Ginger has spent the last four months in relative comfort. She remains in a city abandoned by most, roaming what's left of it, enjoying the fruits of whatever her spirits scavenge for her, and drinking her worries away.

Hours later, thousands of portals tore open across the globe, and they have not closed since. The simultaneous collapse of supply chains, governance, and military coordination led to mass casualties in the first weeks alone, far exceeding what the monsters themselves initially claimed.

The portals connect to numerous worlds. Some spew only feral beasts, others harbor magically advanced civilizations with their own ambitions, and many lead to nothing at all, dead realms offering no threat and no reward. Nuclear strikes on the portals proved futile; the gateways withstand any weapon hurled at them or their vicinity. Worse, many of the emerging monsters resist standard firearms, requiring sustained heavy ordnance or overwhelming force to put down, resources that dried up fast once supply chains shattered.

This combination rendered conventional military responses far less effective than any pre-cataclysm doctrine anticipated. Organized forces still hold wherever they can maintain supply and command, but stretched thin and often isolated, they have bled territory steadily. Magically advanced civilizations pouring from some portals exploited the chaos with deliberate speed, securing footholds before fragmented human forces could mount a coherent defense. Entire regions falling because there were no intact armies left to hold them.

Nations hit less severely owing to portal density, geography, or luck, have begun stabilizing. Some have even pushed forces through portals into less developed worlds, extracting resources to offset the collapse of global trade. These expeditions are risky and limited, but they represent the first proactive human efforts since the catastrophe began.

The Awakened are a rare subset of the population who developed magical abilities in the catastrophe's wake. Their powers vary wildly in type and potency, but even the weakest carry an edge against threats that conventional arms struggle with. The most powerful can single-handedly turn engagements that would otherwise require armor units.

Governments that survived generally treat the Awakened as strategic assets, conscripting or coercing them into service where possible. Many Awakened, however, operate independently, some by choice, others because no authority remains to claim them. In lawless zones, powerful Awakened have carved out petty fiefdoms, their personal might making them untouchable by the scattered survivors around them. These self-made warlords range from benevolent protectors to petty tyrants, their rule held together solely by the threat they can personally bring to bear.

California was effectively severed from the rest of the United States during the first month. The land routes through Nevada and northern Arizona fell to monster swarms and a coordinated push by Ghara, a civilization of goblinlike species hostile to humans.

Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego, collapsed into lawlessness. With failed food and water distribution and supply, the region was quickly abandoned by whatever state authority remained. It is now a patchwork of Awakener-held enclaves, scavenger gangs, and territories ceded to otherworldly forces that marched through coastal portals.

Northern California retains a fragile government under what was the State administration, theoretically still part of the United States but operating with full autonomy. Its military forces, a mix of surviving National Guard, hastily organized militias, and cooperative Awakeners, are spread thin, maintaining order around Sacramento, the Bay Area and crucial Central Valley while containing goblin incursions from the east.

The northern route through Oregon fell under control of Dwarven-like clans, who emerged from a portal in the Cascades. They claimed territory that no surviving human authority could defend, and they have no intention of leaving. They are not hostile to humans in any systematic way, but they acknowledge no American sovereignty. The Californian government, unable to dislodge them, maintains an uneasy emerging diplomatic and trade relationship.

The southern passage through Arizona into Mexico has become the domain of the Barrios Dictatorship, a territory built around the agricultural centers along the Colorado River, where survival depends on controlling the only reliable food production in the region. It is ruled by Cecilia Barrios, a former cartel enforcer turned powerful Awakener, who seized the farmland and its surrounding settlements in the chaos and has held them through a combination of magical strength and ruthless pragmatism. Her territory is one of the few places in the southwest where people eat reliably, provided they obey.
