Those Who Feared the Dark
Darkness has a price. Long before you were born, it nearly cost the kingdom everything.
Generations ago, an order of dark mages broke the world's trust forever — a pact with something ancient, a war against the crown, a bloodline nearly ended. They were hunted to the last and executed in the streets. Since then, anyone born with the affinity has inherited that fear, whether they deserve it or not.
You were one of the rare ones. Born into wealth, raised in silence — hidden from guests, locked away from gatherings, punished for a power you never asked for. The only warmth in that house came from someone who should have known better than to risk it for you.
They paid for that kindness with their life, the week before the law finally forced your family's hand: every mage-born child must attend the Academy. Whether they want you there or not.
You arrive with nothing but scars, a name everyone already fears, and a promise you made to yourself in an empty room. Let's see who survives finding out what you're capable of.
The Kingdom of Virelia
The known world your story takes place in is the continent of Veyrith, and the seat of power over its central and southern reaches is the Kingdom of Virelia — ruled for eleven generations by House Thessaly from the crown city of Corvath. Virelia is not the whole world, but for the purposes of this story it might as well be: its noble houses, its academies, and its long, uneasy relationship with dark magic are the walls this story lives inside.
The Umbral Uprising
Three hundred years ago, Virelia was nearly ended.
The Umbral Concord was not a band of rogue criminals — it was an order, organized and disciplined, built over decades by dark-affinity mages who had grown tired of being hunted for a power they hadn't chosen. Whether they were radicalized by cruelty or corrupted by ambition depends on who's telling the story; both are probably true in different measure for different members. What's not disputed is what they did next: they made a pact with Nyxareth, the Hollow Sovereign — a being the histories call a demon lord, though what that actually means has been exaggerated and mythologized past the point of clarity. Empowered by that pact, the Concord moved against House Thessaly directly, in a single coordinated night of assassination, siege, and magic that the histories simply call the Umbral Uprising.
It nearly worked. Every direct heir to the throne but one died that night. The line survived by the accident of a sickly second cousin being out of the capital at the time — a thread so thin that court historians still argue about how differently the world would look if it had snapped.
The Cleansing
The Concord's defeat, when it came weeks later, was total and public. Its members were executed in the capital square in a spectacle deliberately designed to look like purification — pyres, not blades, so the crowd could watch the darkness supposedly burn out of them. It didn't end there. In the years that followed, the fear didn't fade, it metastasized. Any dark-affinity person — Concord member or not, adult or child — became a target. Villages conducted their own hunts. Some noble houses quietly had dark-affinity children "disappear" rather than risk association. Officially, the Crown never sanctioned this. Unofficially, it rarely intervened either.
That's the inheritance every dark-affinity person in Virelia is born into now, three centuries later: not active law, but a permission structure. Nobody has to say the old fears out loud for a dark-affinity infant to end up quietly unaccounted for, or a dark-affinity noble child to be locked out of every family gathering for eighteen years. The fear was never repealed. It just went unspoken.
The Mage Accord
A century ago, the Crown finally moved to bring some order to this chaos — less out of moral clarity than practical necessity. Untrained mages, dark-affinity or otherwise, are dangerous in ways that eventually become the state's problem. The Mage Accord now requires every confirmed mage-born citizen in Virelia to attend a licensed academy for training and registration, regardless of family wealth, house standing, or personal wishes. For most families this is a formality, even an honor. For a family hiding a dark-affinity child, it's the one door the law won't let them keep closed.
Caelmont Academy
Caelmont sits on a cliffside above the western coast, half a day's ride from Corvath — old enough that parts of its foundation predate the Uprising, expanded and rebuilt over centuries into the sprawling, layered institution it is now. It trains mages of every affinity, sorted loosely by house upon arrival, and answers nominally to the Crown but functions with a great deal of independence under its Headmaster.
Headmaster Aurelius Vance has held the position for over two decades and has a long-standing, quietly controversial reputation for taking a more clinical, less superstition-driven approach to dark affinity than most of his peers. Nobody at court has ever managed to pin down exactly why — whether it's principle, research interest, or something more calculated. He doesn't explain himself, and the Academy's charter gives him enough authority that he doesn't have to.
The Magic System
Mages draw on one of several affinities — light, fire, water, earth, storm, and dark chief among them — each detected through a ritual at enrollment. Most affinities draw on ambient mana in the world around the caster. Dark affinity does not. It draws directly on the void a separate dimension. However rumors think that it sucks the life out of the user, though this is just a myth. It is just very hard to control. This is the real mechanical drawback, though almost nobody outside serious scholarship understands it that specifically; popular belief still prefers older, uglier explanations involving stolen luck or fed-upon life.
What the old fear obscures is that dark magic, properly trained, is one of only two affinities — the other being light — capable of reaching the very top of the power ceiling, and it is the only affinity capable of directly healing corruption: curses, magical rot, wounds inflicted by dark magic itself. A skilled dark mage is not a weapon waiting to go off. They're one of the rarest and most demanding disciplines in the world to master — which is exactly why so few ever get the chance to try.
