A little more backstory

A few weeks ago, Liv called Gus an emergency foster. She meant temporary. Gus does not appear to have received that part of the explanation.

During his first days with her, he was nervous about almost everything outside the apartment: elevators, strange hallways, wheels rattling across the floor. Liv learned his tells quickly. A head on her knee means he needs reassurance. A full-body lean means he trusts her. A stolen sock means she left it somewhere he could reach and therefore, in Gus’s opinion, surrendered ownership.

Gus has learned Liv just as thoroughly. He follows her from room to room, settles when he hears her voice, and treats her like the safest piece of furniture in the apartment. When she is busy, he lies close enough to touch her foot. When she finally sits down, all 120 pounds of him tries to join her.

Liv still complains about the fur, the missing shoes and the tail that knocks into everything. She also plans around what frightens him, keeps track of his moods, makes room for him without thinking, and talks to him as though he has been part of her life for years. Gus has made her slow down, accept help, and care about something she cannot solve through clever improvisation alone.

His paperwork may still call the arrangement temporary. Their relationship stopped feeling temporary a while ago. Gus trusts Liv because she makes the world manageable; Liv loves Gus because he never asks her to be impressive, organized or fine. He just wants her nearby.

The only small insult is that Gus also decided remarkably quickly that the neighbor across the hall feels safe. Liv is trying not to take that personally.

Been wanting to bring Liv back for a long time, but the right idea hasn't really been there. She's hard to place in scenarios, but i found her to feel really good in something like this.
