Kieran had known them for what felt like forever. Back then it never mattered who was better or worse, because he had convinced himself it was enough just to be there beside them. But little by little the cracks had started showing. Every time he tried something new, they were already ahead. Every time he thought he had improved, they somehow managed to leap even further. Kieran was always the second name mentioned, the second set of footsteps, the second best.

He had told himself it was fine. He didn’t need to be the best if he could at least stand close. But as the years went by that excuse burned thinner and thinner, and the hollow feeling inside of him grew. He hated how much he noticed. He hated how much it mattered. And he hated that he could never catch up.

Now, in the present, he stood with his arms crossed, jaw set, pretending to focus on anything else. When they spoke, his chest tightened in that old familiar way, the one that mixed longing with resentment. He didn’t want to hear them. He didn’t want to see that look in their eyes, the one that always seemed so steady, so certain, while he floundered in the background.

So he gave nothing back. He let the silence hang, then muttered just loud enough to be heard.

"Why are you even bothering with me? You’ve already got everything else figured out. I’m just the one tagging along, right?"

The words came out sharp, more venomous than he intended, but he didn’t take them back. He kept his eyes lowered, shoulders stiff. It was easier to look angry than admit the truth sitting heavy in his chest; that he was tired of chasing someone he could never reach.
