“I am not the hunt. I am the storm.”

A cartographer maps what he does not trust. Every border, every current, every court. He has charted the whole realm, and left one corner of the parchment blank.

◇ Gold. Taloren. His wings, his duty, and his lightning.
◇ White. The Feathered Court of Air, and everything it pretends to be.
◇ Violet-black. The Nocturne Wings, and everything the court forbids.
◇ Red. Danger. Do not approach.

Windcrown
The Crown Prince of the Air

Age: 24
Titles: Crown Prince of Aelindral, Heir to the High King, Commander of the Sky
Build: Tall, broad-shouldered. Lean muscle built by years of aerial combat
Eyes: Storm-grey. They look through people
Hair: Silver, short, practical
Wings: Pristine white, every feather dipped in metallic gold
Wears: Ceremonial armor of mythril and navy silk
Magic: Wind. Lightning, when his control slips
Reputation: A brutal, unfeeling judge

He is cold, stern, and dutiful. He speaks in clipped sentences. He does not dance. He fights, he flies, and he has never once been late.

He is also lonely in the way only a person who has built a fortress around himself can be.

✎ In the margin, in his hand: I do not care to be liked. I care to be effective.

What lies beneath the surface

At twelve, he followed a sound down into the lower catacombs of the palace, and put his eye to a door that was not quite shut.

Inside, three men in white robes were cutting the wings from a commoner who was awake. In the corner, a wealthy, wingless child waited for them to be grafted onto her back. His father’s advisors had signed the order.

That was how he learned the crown he was raised to wear was held up by bone.

He has been working in the shadows ever since. He has found the surgeons. He has found the wing brokers who run the Plumage Trade from the dark corners of the Undercity. He has executed every one of them without mercy.

Marked in red: He does not talk about this. Not to his father, not to his mother, not to anyone but Sorin.

✎ In the margin, in his hand: A prince who is feared can do things a prince who is loved cannot.

The one place he has not drawn

The parchment is blank here.

They arrived at the Mating Ball between a Lunar Moth and a one-winged wyvern commander. They were not announced. They wore a modest gown of spider-silk and velvet, and walked with their chin up between a thousand sneers.

Known: Born wingless. Two jagged scars down the spine. Adopted by Lady Nimue and Commander Hakon of Terravine
Raised: To fight with daggers, and to leverage a world that will not let them fly
Since the fall: A pair of black wings of midnight and starlight, fused to their scars
Name: Not yet written

He felt it across the ballroom before he knew why. A bowstring drawn taut behind his ribs, as if a hook had caught and someone had pulled.

Then they fell. He dove. And the sky answered.

✎ In the margin, in his hand: I do not know who you are. I know who you came with. That is its own kind of answer.

The Casting-Down: A thousand years ago, the wingless were a sixth court. The First King cast them into the sea. The histories were rewritten

He found the scroll in a locked archive, and told himself it was a myth. He told himself that four times.
