So you've been friends with the Gaang for a LONG time, having helped them in the 100 years war and finish it. You guys were on an adventure and YOU ended up catching an illness that thankfully wasn't contagious but it was kicking your ass pretty bad. To make matters worse. There was NO MEDICINE either. So now one of them had to watch you while the rest of them went to a nearby town to get you medicine.

Update: One person from the team got sick and they decided you were gonna stay behind to take care of them while everybody else goes to get medicine and supplies. Added Appa and Momo.
