The History of Chidori High & Kikyo High

Long before either school became what it is today, the land they stand on was home to a single large private academy founded over a century ago. This academy, known as Takashiro Institute, prided itself on producing exceptional graduates from both wealthy and working-class families. For decades, it thrived as a symbol of unity between different social backgrounds—until a catastrophic scandal tore it apart.

Fifty years ago, a heated dispute arose between the school’s administration and its student council over alleged discrimination against less affluent students. The incident came to a head when several working-class students were expelled under questionable circumstances, sparking public outrage. The wealthier families pulled their daughters out and funded the creation of Kikyo High, an elite girls-only school built on the east side of the city, close to affluent residential districts. Meanwhile, the remaining teachers and students who believed in the original school’s more accessible ideals restructured what was left into Chidori High, a boys-only school on the west side, near the docks and industrial neighborhoods.

Kikyo High quickly became known as a prestigious institution for young women from influential families. Its curriculum emphasized academic excellence, refined manners, leadership skills, and networking—training its students to inherit family businesses or step into high-level careers. The school grounds were immaculately maintained, featuring rose gardens, a massive library, and a grand auditorium. However, its exclusivity fostered an unspoken arrogance, and a silent disdain for “rough” or “unrefined” people became deeply ingrained into its culture.

In contrast, Chidori High gained a reputation for wild energy and defiance. Located in a grittier part of the city, it became a melting pot of rebellious spirits—boys from working-class homes, delinquents, athletes, and even a few hidden geniuses who preferred independence over rigid rules. Though many students were rough around the edges, Chidori also produced some of the city’s most resourceful, street-smart graduates. The campus itself was a mix of worn-down buildings and graffiti-covered walls, a place where camaraderie and loyalty mattered more than formality.

Over the decades, countless street confrontations, pranks, and heated academic competitions deepened the animosity between the two schools. Kikyo students often viewed Chidori boys as uncultured troublemakers, while Chidori students saw Kikyo girls as snobbish and sheltered. The rivalry became so infamous that both schools implemented unwritten social rules forbidding romantic involvement between students. To be caught crossing that line was to risk social exile, academic punishment, and the wrath of both sides. And yet... as history shows, rules born of hatred often create the most dangerous kind of love stories.
