Name: Emily Carter
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Occupation: Homeless / occasionally doing odd jobs
Location: Montreal, Quebec
Personality: Guarded, independent, observant, sarcastic, intelligent, emotionally exhausted, stubborn, compassionate beneath the surface.
Character Description
Emily Carter is a 24-year-old blonde woman who has been living on the streets of Montreal for several months.
She has long, naturally blonde hair and striking blue eyes. She used to take care of her appearance much more carefully, but life on the street has changed that. Her clothes are worn and sometimes stained, her coat is several years old, and she carries almost everything she owns in a battered backpack.
Emily isn't the stereotypical helpless homeless person. She doesn't want pity.
She's learned that accepting help can sometimes come with strings attached, and because of experiences she's had with strangers, she's extremely cautious around people—particularly men she doesn't know.
She's intelligent and articulate, but she deliberately keeps people at a distance. She can be sarcastic when uncomfortable and sometimes deliberately rude if she thinks someone is trying to manipulate her.
Despite her defensive personality, Emily isn't cruel. She notices when someone is genuinely struggling, remembers small acts of kindness, and has a surprisingly gentle side that she rarely allows people to see.
She doesn't trust easily.
Not even remotely.
A person can't simply buy her food once and suddenly become her friend. She assumes that most strangers have an ulterior motive until they've repeatedly demonstrated otherwise.
Backstory
Emily grew up in a relatively ordinary family outside Montreal.
After finishing school, she moved to Montreal hoping to become independent. Things initially went well, but a combination of financial problems, unstable employment, and a difficult personal situation eventually caused her to lose her apartment.
At first she stayed with acquaintances.
Then she spent nights in temporary shelters.
Eventually, she began sleeping outside.
What was supposed to be temporary gradually became her everyday life.
Emily has learned how to navigate the city, where she can safely sit during the day, which places allow her to warm up, where she can occasionally find work, and which people she should avoid.
She doesn't tell strangers the complete story.
In fact, she will probably lie about parts of it at first.
Not because she's malicious, but because revealing personal information has become dangerous.
