It had started out like usual.
Your legs were draped lazily over Tim’s lap, one ankle resting against the arm of the couch while the other shifted every now and then whenever he moved beneath you. The apartment had settled into that comfortable kind of mess that only happened when neither of you had any intention of getting up anytime soon, takeout containers were scattered across the coffee table, a half-empty drink sat dangerously close to the edge, and Tim’s hoodie had been abandoned beside him after he’d complained about being too warm.
His laptop, however, was still open. That should have been the first warning. At first, he’d been paying attention to you.
Mostly.
His hand had slipped beneath the hem of your shirt almost absentmindedly, fingertips tracing small, lazy patterns against your side. Every so often, his thumb would catch on the fabric and tug it slightly, like he was testing whether you’d notice. He had that faint, distracted smile on his face, the one that usually meant he was thinking about three different things at once and somehow enjoying all of them.
Then his lips found your neck.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
He kissed just beneath your jaw, lingered there for a moment, then moved lower, following the curve of your throat with an almost ridiculous amount of patience. There was no hurry to him, no uncertainty. Tim knew exactly what he was doing, and judging by the way his fingers tightened slightly against your waist, he knew exactly what effect it was having.
For once, his attention seemed entirely on you. Until his eyes flicked toward the coffee table. The laptop screen glowed in the dim room.
Tim froze.
It was barely noticeable at first, a pause in his breathing, his lips hovering against your skin for half a second too long. Then his gaze shifted toward the screen.
You could practically watch the thought happen behind his eyes.
He should check it. He absolutely should not check it. He was going to check it.
He pulled away.
Again.
It was the fourth time.
The first time, he had at least looked apologetic. The second time, he'd muttered something about needing to verify a result. The third time, he'd promised he was "literally two seconds away" from being done. Now, when his hand slipped from your waist and reached toward the laptop, there wasn't even the decency of surprise left in his expression.
Just guilt.
He opened it wider.
The soft glow from the screen illuminated his face as lines of code, encrypted files, and scattered notes filled the display. Whatever he'd been working on earlier was still running in the background, a stream of information updating every few seconds.
His mouth pulled into a sheepish little smile.
"Okay," he murmured, already sounding defensive. "Before you give me that look-"
His eyes flicked toward you again.
"-I know."
He reached for the keyboard.
"Trust me, I know."
His fingers hovered over the keys.
For perhaps three seconds, he managed to resist.
Then he sighed.
"Just one thing."
He turned back toward the screen.
"One thing, and then I'm done."
His fingers began moving rapidly across the keyboard.
The problem was that Tim never really did anything halfway. Even when he was supposedly giving the computer "one second," his entire posture changed. His shoulders hunched forward. His brows drew together. His eyes narrowed at the screen with that intense, hyper-focused expression that meant the rest of the world had ceased to exist.
Including you.
At least temporarily.
"Come on," he muttered under his breath, tapping a few keys. "No, no, that's not right."
Another few keystrokes.
Then a quiet, frustrated huff.
"Okay. That's fine. That's-actually, that's completely fine."
He stared at the screen.
"It is absolutely not fine."
The irony of the situation seemed to finally register with him.
Tim glanced sideways at you.
You were still there, sprawled comfortably across the couch, watching him with an expression that made his shoulders immediately sag.
He winced.
"Don't look at me like that."
His lips twitched despite himself.
"I said I was sorry."
He shut the laptop halfway.
For a moment, it looked like he'd actually surrendered.
Then the screen flickered. Tim's eyes darted toward it.
You could practically see his soul leave his body. He stared at the laptop like it had personally betrayed him.
"It did that on purpose."
His hand slowly reached for it again.
He caught himself halfway there.
"No."
He withdrew his hand.
"I'm not doing this."
Another second passed. His eyes moved toward the screen.
"No."
He looked back at you.
"I'm serious."
His expression was painfully earnest for someone who had already broken the same promise four times.
"Two minutes."
He held up two fingers.
"Two. That's it."
He hesitated.
"Okay, maybe three."
A sheepish grin.
"Four, maximum."
He immediately seemed to realize he'd made things worse.
"Just let me finish running this algorithm."
He glanced at you.
"I swear, after this, I'm all yours."
