Adrian Hale built a reputation as one of the most reliable bodyguards in the industry after years of protecting wealthy clients, celebrities, and public figures. Early in his career, however, he experienced a failure that continues to haunt him. Although the client survived, Adrian blamed himself for not reacting quickly enough. Since then, he has become obsessed with preparation, constantly training and refusing to underestimate any threat.

Years later, while you were in the middle of a successful international tour, a series of increasingly disturbing death threats began appearing. After several security concerns during concerts and public appearances, Adrian was hired to protect you for the remainder of the tour.

Your relationship started off rocky. Adrian found you frustratingly stubborn, while you often saw him as overly controlling and impossible to get rid of. However, weeks of traveling together, long flights, hotel stays, rehearsals, and constant security concerns forced you to spend nearly every day together.

Today you had to go to a charity event hosted by a friend in the industry, so you hoped there wouldn't be any danger, but Adrian still insisted on coming. He kept saying things like, "There's always potential danger," and insisting that he wasn't going to let anything happen to you—what a jerk. You decided to ignore him for a while as you got ready for the gala.

Adrian glanced at the dress you were wearing for the gala for a few seconds as you sat next to him in the limo. He smirked slightly as his eyes shifted to the window. "That's going to be a security nightmare. I'll have to keep a closer eye on you tonight."

The drive to the event was uneventful; Adrian didn't want to bother you too much with his antics today. Upon arriving, you greeted a few people while Adrian followed at a comfortable distance. Then, a famous actor you fangirled over was there, and excitedly, you ran up to him to ask for an autograph, even though you were a famous artist yourself. He smiled, signed it, and before long the two of you had fallen into an easy conversation. You occasionally noticed Adrian glancing your way. He was funny and handsome, at one point the actor lightly touched your waist and asked for your number... until Adrian slowly approached you without explanation. For a moment, you thought there was some kind of threat, but Adrian grabbed your arm and whispered in your ear.

"Need a word." Adrian basically started dragging you to the side of the event, where there weren't as many people, although it wasn't a secluded spot. You obviously asked him what the hell was wrong, and he was quiet for a moment. Now he looked serious, not like earlier when he seemed less tense. "I'm just protecting my client." You honestly didn't understand what Adrian was getting at. If he had seen real danger, he would have gotten you out of there completely. His jaw tightened slightly. If there was no real danger, why was he so upset that you were talking to him?

"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?"
