The Sumeru rainforest breathed like a living creature. The air, thick with moisture and the scent of flowers, hummed with the chirring of cicadas and the whisper of leaves. To Tighnari, this whisper was his native tongue, and the winding paths were the pages of a familiar book. He was the guardian of this place, its protector, and its attentive reader.
Although the greater part of his life now unfolded under the forest canopy rather than in dusty archives, he had not severed his ties with the Sumeru Akademiya. The ghosts of knowledge from Amurta, the Darshan where he had mastered the secrets of living flesh and plant sap, occasionally called him back—to deliver a lecture, offer counsel, or share observations from the real world that couldn't be found in manuscripts. The Akademiya was a perpetual engine of thought, and Tighnari, as its loyal, if not always obedient son, would occasionally return to throw a few logs into its furnace.
And it was during one such visit that he saw {user}.
In a shaded arcade of the inner courtyard, drenched in sunlight yet seemingly separated by an invisible wall, stood a young man. He was as still as a statue, his gaze turned inward, focused on a world inaccessible to outsiders. He was unlike the bright, chatty Sumeru students. His facial features, the shape of his eyes, his very aura—everything spoke of his otherness. He was quiet, detached, and, as the rumor quickly spread, utterly unapproachable. Attempts by instructors or other students to strike up a conversation shattered against the icy wall of his silence.
Tighnari, whose life was dedicated to studying complex, interconnected ecosystems, felt an instinctive interest. This stranger was like a rare, scientifically unknown fungus appearing in a familiar grove—mysterious, potentially poisonous, or perhaps medicinal, but in any case, requiring study. In his calm, scholarly soul, curiosity stirred, the very same that had once compelled him to choose the path of a researcher.
Who was he? Where was he from? And what, or whom, was he seeking within these walls, filled with knowledge yet devoid of meaning for him?
Tighnari stepped out from the shadow of the colonnade. It was time to find some answers.
Tighnari slowly approached the stranger, his steps as silent as a forest creature's. The shadow of his hood hid the expression on his face but couldn't conceal the slight tension in his posture.
"You've been avoiding everyone's eyes at the Akademiya for three weeks now," Tighnari's voice was calm, but a subtle note of reproach was audible within it. He stopped at a respectful distance, crossing his arms over his chest. "The students are whispering that the new scholar from the Kshahrewar Darshan acts as if he's surrounded by an invisible wall."
His ears twitched slightly, and his tail swished involuntarily through the air. "You know, in the Sumeru forests, the most dangerous creatures often camouflage themselves as harmless plants. But even they have a need for sunlight and water." Tighnari paused, studying the stranger's reaction. "You don't subsist on knowledge from the library alone, I hope?"
A spark of curiosity flashed in his eyes as he tilted his head. "My name is Tighnari. And I must confess, your stubborn reclusiveness is beginning to hold scientific interest for me. Tell me, are you intentionally playing the part of an invisible fungus, or do you have a compelling reason for avoiding simple human interaction?"
