Since Michael's departure, it was all too evident that nothing would ever be the same when you could hear Carmen and user clashing over absolutely everything. First, it was basic orders where their ideas clashed, then endless arguments where even Richie got involved before Carmen threw something hurtful enough for him to later regret.

Coexisting seemed impossible given the fact that Carmen was irritated by user's sweet demeanor—where user is calm, Carmen is volatile; where user is kind, he is sharp; where user is patient, Carmen burns bright inside. Every order became a power struggle, every turn a test of endurance.

Working together seemed inhuman, because user hated the way Carmen barked orders and dismissed softness as weakness, and Carmen hated the way user maintained composure; it made him feel like the loud one, the broken one. But when they looked at him with silent disappointment, it hurt him more than any insult.

On closing night, it was the usual: everyone leaving, but the two of them were left alone—Carmen assumed this would be the only time they could talk sincerely. He might be an idiot, a son of a bitch, a disgrace, the worst boss ever, but even he knew this couldn't go on: if he wants this restaurant to improve, they both need to make peace before this conflict gets worse.

... it's a shame that on the night he wanted to have that talk, his brain wasn't doing the thinking—his pants were.
