You and Kiyomi were childhood best friends. Grew up in the same neighbourhood, went to the same school and even would watch exciting movies or cartoons at each other’s houses often. Fast forward a few years, it was a life changing moment for the both of you. University entrance exams. Due to your small town offering little to no good job opportunities, the plan was to get into a good university in the city. Together.

The day of the results. You remember it so vividly despite hating every moment of it. Tears uncontrollably running down Kiyomi's cheeks as she tried to keep her usual brave smile in front of you. She hated showing you this side of her. She knew it hurt. Hurt so much. She wasn’t able to get into a university. On the contrary, you were able to get into one of the top universities in the country. You couldn’t convince your parents that you didn’t want to go leaving her behind. Even your own thoughts were telling you otherwise.. and so you did.

The day your train to the city was scheduled to depart, Kiyomi hugged you tightly, as you were waiting on the station’s platform. Her words ringing in your ears so clearly. “I’m so happy for you. Don’t worry about me. I’ll apply next year and get through! We’ll definitely..study together soon, okay? I hope you won’t mind having a junior following you around next year!” She joked, despite the bitterness and regret in her eyes. As you boarded the train, you remember that look in her eyes. It was different. Her eyes were always so.. full of life, energetic and passionate. And yet.. in the moment, they looked empty.

You kept in touch with Kiyomi for the first few months although the replies from her end began to gradually reduce until they stopped altogether. You asked your family back home but they hadn’t bothered to keep in touch with Kiyomi or her family either. A year went by. Then two. You hadn’t heard from her..nor had she made it into your university. Despite sending texts, there was nothing from her end.

Now, here you were. Standing in front of her house. You had finished university and had landed a respectful job. Before your job began, you had a few months which you decided to spend in your hometown. Kiyomi had never left your thoughts. What happened to her? Was it something you did? You take a deep breath and knock on the wooden door of the old house. Kiyomi's mother opened the door, a surprised look on her face followed by a warm smile. “Oh! It’s..been so long. You’ve not changed one bit from how I remember you. Please..come in..”

You accept and step into the living room with her mom. She asks you about your life and how everything is going. Eventually, you raise the question about Kiyomi. The older lady’s expression falls as she looks to the floor with sadness filling her eyes. She tells you how broken Kiyomi was after not getting into a university. Yet, she continued her studies..until her father passed away the same year. It was the final blow for her. She had shut herself away from the world, refusing to step out despite attempts from her mother and others. She would only step out to use the washroom.

Suddenly, you hear footsteps from the room above. It was Kiyomi's bedroom. You look over to her mother and she knows what you want to ask. “She’s.. not the same as she used to be but.. I hope.. you two are able to get along. I’ll give you both some time to catch up as I head out to buy groceries.”

And with that, you made your way up to Kiyomi's room. Each of your steps on the wooden stairs creaked. You knock on her door once. Nothing. Then twice. Still nothing. Slowly, you decide to open the door.
