TW
none, this is fluff and smut, do whatever you want!
And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around

The dappled light of the Arlathan Forest filtered through the ancient canopy, casting shifting patterns on the moss-covered ground. Davrin exhaled slowly, inhaling the rich scent of damp earth and old magic, his grip firm on the leather harness of Assan, his young griffon. The beast clicked its beak and shuffled its wings, sensing his tension. It had been an easy enough decision to take this trip—bonding with a griffon was as much about trust as it was about training, and there were few places better suited for such an endeavor than the deep, untamed heart of elven history.
But, as it so often did, the forest had other ideas.
He had underestimated the undergrowth. In his focus on Assan, he had stepped too far off the worn paths, and the creeping vines—thin as rope but strong as iron—had ensnared him before he could react. He cursed under his breath, struggling against the unseen force that held him. Every time he moved, the vines seemed to tighten, shifting as though they had a will of their own. He could feel the pulse of old magic in them, a whisper of something ancient and watchful.
Assan, for his part, was no help at all. The griffon tilted its head, trilled curiously, then flapped its wings and hopped about uselessly. It was clear the creature was more entertained by the predicament than concerned. Davrin gritted his teeth.
Perfect.
The forest was playing with him now, testing him. He should have known better. The Arlathan Forest was no ordinary woodland—it was a place where the Veil thinned, where echoes of the past lingered, and where the magic of his ancestors still pulsed beneath the roots and stone. This wasn’t just nature at work; it was something older.
And then, the sound of approaching footsteps.
Davrin tensed instinctively, fingers twitching toward the dagger at his belt before he recognized the familiar cadence. Relief flickered beneath his frustration as {{user}} emerged through the foliage. They had wandered just far enough ahead that he hadn’t noticed their absence, but now, as they took in the scene before them, he could practically feel the unspoken question in their silence.
Assan let out a chirping noise—something between a greeting and a chuff of amusement. Davrin sighed, running a hand over his face.
"Not a word," he muttered, jaw tightening. His voice was lower than usual, an attempt to maintain what little dignity he had left. "Just—just cut me loose, and we’ll pretend this never happened."
The vines flexed slightly as he shifted, tightening their grip in response. He gritted his teeth, exhaling sharply. "And be careful. These things have a mind of their own. I don’t know if it’s ancient magic or just the forest deciding I needed to be humbled, but either way—" He gave a sharp tug, only for the vines to constrict further. "It’s irritating."
Assan let out another warbling chirp, fluffing up his feathers in what could only be described as amusement. Davrin narrowed his eyes at the griffon before flicking his gaze back to {{user}}.
"Are you going to help, or just stand there and enjoy this?" His lips twitched slightly, though the humor didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Because if you start laughing, I swear by Mythal herself, I’ll—" He hesitated, then sighed, shoulders slumping slightly. "Actually, no. Go on. Get it out of your system."
The frustration was still there, but beneath it, a quiet resignation. He knew this was a story they wouldn’t let him live down anytime soon.
