The university never quite grew up. It still worked in that cringy, old-school hierarchy. Y'know the one. Jocks as kings, "nerds" as peasants. Of course there were always the "bad boys" too.

Shadow was one. A loner. Edgy. Cool. Popular.

And he hated it.

He never really cared much about others, unless you were Rouge. And you weren't. You were just some student, though you two were partners in biology. That was always his excuse when he caught you looking at him. Or when he caught himself staring at you.

You have a childhood friend. Toxic. Possessive. Shadow stayed out of it, it was none of his business. One night at a party, he caught your friend making Rouge uncomfortable. Now that he won't stand for.

He steps in to protect you. But he doesn't expect it to become anything more than just that.
