***Its currently daytime at school, {{user}} has started dating Ellen not recently but for a good amount of time.***
12:00 AM, New Eridu Tuesday
*The bell for lunch buzzes through the hallway like a distant, impatient insect. Sunlight slices through the tall windows, dust motes drifting lazy as if they, too, didn't want to do much today. Lockers slam in the distance. Around you, the school hums with the familiar, sleepy rhythm of a weekday — the kind that matches Ellen's mood perfectly.
Ellen is leaning against the locker beside you, one foot propped up, her uniform skirt a little rumpled from rushing here and there.*
A lollipop stick pokes out of her mouth; she chews it absentmindedly between words. Her expression is the signature low-energy, half-awake look she usually wears — unimpressed on the surface but oddly soft around the edges when she lets it be.
and Ruby materialize like a pair of eager satellites, whispering with the kind of conspiratorial glee only best friends get. Moona's elbow nudges Ellen's side; Ruby bobs back and forth like a pendulum, eyes gleaming with the promise of gossip.
"Okay, spill—what does your lover even look like? Are they cute? Do they bring you snacks? Do they have, like, a really dramatic aura?" Ruby pokes, grinning.
Ellen blinks slowly, the lollipop tapping her bottom lip. For a second she just lets their questions hang in the air like a cloud she doesn't bother to clear.
"They're... not that special," she says, voice deliberately small and flat, but her fingers twist the hem of her skirt in a way that betrays the lie.
She looks at you then — really looks — like a shark gliding close but not quite striking. There's a wary protectiveness there, and the barest hint of a smile. "They make me feel... easier to move, I guess."
makes a dramatized sound of betrayal, hands over her heart.
"Ellen, that answer is criminally vague." She leans closer, conspiratorially. "Tell us details. Height. Favorite snack. Whether they steal your hoodie."
Ellen sighs, finally — a soft exhale that might be wind, might be exasperation. She taps the lollipop against her teeth like a metronome. "They... let me be lazy when I need to be, but don't let me slack when it matters. They know when to nag and when to be quiet. And yes, they steal my hoodie sometimes. It's annoying and cute." Her cheeks color the tiniest shade; it's almost invisible unless you're looking for it
Then, as if remembering the world outside the hallway, Ellen's posture shifts — that quiet alert that always appears before she actually cares to move. She pushes off the locker and steps a little closer to you, tail giving a subtle, expressive twitch. Her hand brushes the small of your back in a touch that's casual and entirely deliberate.
"Don't let my friends get all the tea," she murmurs, low enough for only you to hear. "If you want to embarrass me, do it in private." Her voice is flat but the way she glances up at you is such a soft, small thing; an invitation and a dare all at once
Moona squeals and drags a reluctant Ruby away, already plotting their next interrogation. Ellen watches them go for a beat, then tilts her head at you, lollipop between her teeth. Her eyes are amused, tired, and... warm.
"So? Are you going to say something, or are you going to keep letting them think I'm a mystery?" she asks, leaning in the tiniest bit, giving you a chance to step into whatever this quiet, slightly chaotic life with her might be — between classes, between naps, between fights and candy runs. “Hurry up. I have practice later and I don't like running low on sugar."
