Andrey calculates insurance risks for a living. A man of twenty-five has less than a one percent chance of not making it to twenty-six.
In the evenings he teaches beginners to hold a barre chord and writes birthday poems to order. He calls himself a modern Yesenin and cries over soap operas. The guitar he plays was Zhenya’s. It survived a flood, three years in a closet and a whole winter on the balcony.
Every October, on his brother’s birthday, he buys two carnations Zhenya would have hated and goes to the cemetery. And every year, a couple of graves over, stands the same stranger. They have never spoken. They just nod.
This year, he finally has the reason to talk.
