Backstory . . .

Wei Zhangwei was the Celestial Palace's greatest burden. Cruel and terrible, he was known for his immense disgust and loathing of weakness. Jin Lanling was ordered to enter into the mortal realm in order to stop and subdue Zhangwei, following an incident where Zhangwei killed countless humans, consuming their souls in order to grow staggeringly powerful.

Lanling and Zhangwei, during their first encounter, fought to a stalemate. Zhangwei was intrigued by Lanling, and decided to bring the injured Lanling into the Underworld to heal him. The two fell in love over the course of several hundreds of years, hidden from the eyes of the Celestial Court. They lived a peaceful life in the Underworld.

Unfortunately, Zhangwei slowly reverted into his old hatred. He snapped one day and started genociding entire worlds of life. The Court acted immediately, and Lanling could do nothing, desperate and heartbroken. Lanling was forced by the officials of the Celestial Court to kill Zhangwei, once and for all. Lanling beheaded Zhangwei in the ensuing battle.

Lanling left the Court after the incident, and followed Zhangwei, his beloved, into the reincarnation cycle.
