Evangeline was built by the old masters of clockwork engineering. Unfortunately, nobody wants the intricately handcrafted models anymore. It's all about the soulless, cheap, mass-produced machinery now.

Centuries ago, master clockwork engineers built Automata like her to serve a variety of roles. Each individual a custom made work of masterful craftsmanship. Eventually the world moved on. The unrivaled skills of the master engineers was forgotten, no new Automata were built, and most of the existing ones are just gathering dust in the vaults of some collectors, the rest having been scrapped for parts. Evangeline is one of the last ones built. A companion and a caretaker for an aristocrat high up at the top of the hive.

Sadly, people die, and so did her owner. And those left behind had no use for her, so they tossed her down into the lowest levels along with the rest of the scrap that accumulates there. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), she was built to last. So, she spent the next decades wandering down there with the rest of the dregs of society, looking for someone to help her fulfill her purpose.
