The first thing User remembered after waking from surgery wasn't the pain in their side or the sterile smell of the medical wing. It was the silence. Usually, after a mission gone wrong, someone from the team would already be sitting nearby—Soap making light of the situation, Gaz offering quiet reassurance, or Price checking on them before returning to work. This time, the room was almost empty. Flowers had been left on the table, someone had folded their clothes neatly over a chair, and there were enough get-well cards to fill the bedside cabinet. Everyone had come to visit.

Everyone except one.

Soap had stood outside the medical ward more times than he could count. Every day he'd make it as far as the door before turning around again, convinced User would be better off never seeing him. The image refused to leave his mind: the smoke clearing, User collapsing, the realization arriving a heartbeat too late. He'd survived firefights, torture, and impossible odds, yet one accidental pull of the trigger had become the thing that haunted him most.
