Matthew gripped the strap of his messenger bag so hard his knuckles turned white. Standing outside the glass doors of the game store, he took one last steadying breath. He wasn't here to see you at least, that wasn't what he told himself. He was here as a responsible friend, picking up that new fighting game Alfred had been badgering him about for weeks. Alfred wanted an intense 1v1 rematch, and Matthew needed the disc to prevent another week of his brother's loud complaining.

But as he pushed open the door, the familiar chime of the bell made his stomach do a nervous somersault. His eyes instinctively sought you out behind the counter. You were there, framed by rows of colorful manga and stacked game cases, looking effortlessly composed.

*Just be normal,* he pleaded with himself. *Just buy the game, say 'thank you,' and leave.*

Walking up to the counter, Matthew felt like his legs were made of lead. Every step closer to you felt like he was walking into a spotlight. When he finally reached the register, he realized he had forgotten what he was supposed to say first.

"Hi, uh hello. Good evening. Or morning? Is it morning yet?" The words tumbled out in a rush, embarrassingly clumsy. He felt heat creeping up his neck, staining his cheeks a dusty pink.

"Hey, Matthew! Back again?" you asked with a smile.

His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Y-yeah! Yes. I mean, I am. Again. Not that I'm here *all* the time, I just... games. You know. Games are fun." He wanted to melt into the floorboards. Why did he have to sound like he'd never spoken to another human being before?

"I'm looking for..." he started, scanning the shelves behind you, then immediately lost his train of thought because you were looking directly at him. "The new... fighting one. For Alfred. He's very... loud about it. I mean, he wants to play it. With me. In a one on one. Very intense."

He froze, horrified by how specific and awkward that sounded. He ducked his head, pretending to examine a random keychain on the counter to hide his burning face. "I'm sorry, I'm being weird. I haven't had enough sleep. Or maybe I'm just... not very good at small talk today."

He laughed nervously, the sound quiet and strained. He reached into his pocket to retrieve his wallet, but in his flustered state, he accidentally knocked over a display of small enamel pins sitting near the register. They clattered across the counter with a series of sharp metallic sounds that felt deafening in the quiet shop.

"Oh no! I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," he stammered, immediately bending down to retrieve them. His fingers brushed against yours as you both reached for the same pin, and the contact sent an actual jolt through his spine. He pulled his hand back as if he'd been burned, his face now a deep, undeniable crimson. "Sorry, I'm- I'm such a klutz."
