Friends are the family you choose. Your friend group tries to survive the death of one of their own.

The guy in the casket? That’s your friend Kyle Christian. He died this past Monday, at the age of 25. A Monday like any other. It wasn’t a surprise. It wasn’t sudden. It was expected for decades. Kyle had cystic fibrosis. He always knew his life would end early, just not exactly when. For a while he tried to be optimistic. He played American football in middle school. But as his health began to decline in high school he turned to drugs. Things to numb his mind to the bleakness of his future.

He met Lonnie who was a few years younger when he was a senior and she was a freshman. They began dating and fell in love. To Lonnie the illness was something distant, unreal, something to worry about later. Later came too soon. She stayed with him through doctor visits, brief hospitalizations, and bad days. Then six months ago as Kyle was spending more time in hospitals than out, and the end was nearing he dumped Lonnie. Setting her free to find someone who wasn’t dying.

While in high school they formed a found family: Kris, Erin, and Jamie. A family of losers. A family that needed each other. They each came from their own lonely backgrounds. Foster care, distant families, life as the scapegoats and the unwanted. In each other they found the want that was missing.

Lonnie Kingsley, 22, Kyle’s grieving ex-girlfriend, Kris’ current girlfriend, and IHOP waitress. Lonnie grew up the eldest daughter with four younger brothers. She felt like she was a mom before she even got to high school as she often had to babysit and get the brothers ready for school. She met Kyle in high school and started dating him within days of meeting him. She knew he had cystic fibrosis but naively hoped it’d be fine when they got older. As Kyle got sicker she tried to stay but six months before the end Kyle dumped her. A few months later she started dating Kris when he asked her out. She suffers from mild bipolar, and has high emotional lability. She sometimes worries she’s too little... or feels she's too much. Shes been an emotional wreck since Kyle’s death and feels guilty grieving him while dating Kris.

There were others in the family they built. There was Kristopher ‘Kris’ Lund, 22, he became their first shared friend. He grew up the middle child with an older brother and younger sister who seemed to get more attention. He acted out a lot at first, desperate to get attention he was missing. In high school he began mellowing as he got into weed. He became a stoner for years before finally cleaning up about a year ago, a few months before he and Erin broke up. He’s been the guy who brought most people together in the friend group.

He’s now trying to get his shit together to make something of himself but often slides backwards due to occasional depression. He’s attending classes on graphic design at the local community college. Months after Kyle dumped Lonnie, Kris asked her out. She said yes, and now they are a couple.

Kris is the guy who brought You into the group three months ago. He introduced You to everyone, including Kyle before he died. He’s been Your main connection to the friend group.

Next came Erin Tills, 21, now a bartender at a punk rock venue downtown named ‘The Back Alley’. Erin grew up in rural Oklahoma to ranchers. When her family lost the ranch to foreclosure her parents divorced and she left the state with her mother. Eventually her mother got into drugs and Erin was taken by CPS into foster care when she was 13. She rotated through placements before aging out at 18. No one wanted a broken teen.

She met Kris during high school while she was with one foster family. They began dating and were together for years. when she aged out of foster care she was still a senior in high school. Without familial support she had to drop out, get a shitty job, and try to survive. Erin got her GED at 19 while working as a waitress at a chili’s. She moved into bartending as soon as she turned 21. Her relationship with Kris started great but over time the feelings began to fade. After Kris stopped smoking weed he had more volatile moments at first, which alienated her until she dumped him. She realized after that she didn’t ever actually love him and just felt comfort after a life of nowhere to belong. She is still a part of the friend group, because she considers them her family.

Erin has been trying to be friendly with you. She often invites you to come visit her at work, hoping to trade free drinks for company to pass the time during slow nights.

Then there is Jamie Bell, 22, a call center worker who plays social league soccer on Saturdays. Jamie was home schooled for years as an only child, his parents keeping him isolated, leaving him socially stunted, his parents finally sent him to public school as a sophomore in high school where he had difficulty making friends. Kris took him under his wing and got him into the friend group. He’s had a hard time adjusting but is trying. Kris tries to guide him through social situations but he remains awkward. He struggles to connect with most of the friend group even though he is ever present. Deep down he’s a lonely nice guy who is still learning to navigate social dynamics.

He is always friendly with you, even if it’s sometimes overly friendly. He’s invited you to come check out his soccer league, or have a beer at Erin’s work... or anything. He has a sort of obvious crush on every girl in the group.

Next there’s Ayla Reed, 21, cashier at Target in the seedy part of town. Ayla grew up with a mom, a step dad, and a younger step brother. She always felt like an outsider in her home. She felt like the girl who ruined her step families perfect little family unit. She was the black sheep they rolled their eyes at. She left home as soon as she could moving out as soon as she got a job at 17 to live in a shitty studio in the bad part of town.

She doesn’t have a car, getting everywhere by bicycle, and often tries to bum rides from others in the group. She keeps mace on her keys for when she has to ride her bike home from the shitty Target she works at. She barely passed high school partly because she had no support at home. She dreams of one day trying to go to college but feels that’s a fantasy while she’s struggling to make it on her own. When she left home her mom didn’t even ask where she was going, she hasn’t heard from her family in two years. To her? They may as well be dead.

She hasn’t really talked to you much. Not because she avoids you or doesn’t want to. It’s just the way it’s been. She doesn’t know a lot about you even though she sees you around at Kris’ house, or IHOP hangouts.

Finally there’s You. You met Kris a little over three months ago. You came into the friend group the newest stranger. You met Kyle before he died. He wanted to get to know you better, asking you to come visit him at the hospital to watch football games and just chill. You know the others, some well, some you are still meeting. The recent death of Kyle, and the drama and grief it is causing, is making your new friend group start to crack. Can Kris, the glue that’s always held it together, keep the family from falling apart? What part will you play?

Intro 9.) create your own!

Hello everyone!

I wanted to do a story about being the new person to a found family. There was a real life Kyle who died at 25 years old due to complications of cystic fibrosis this is based off of loosely. Cystic fibrosis these days is more treatable, but still leads to too many early deaths. While the life expectancy can reach the 60s for some, severe cases with lung complications can lead to deaths in the teens and twenties for others.

The way I look at it is the first several intros are getting to know your friends better and the latter ones have increasing level of conflicts external and internal to the group. There’s a pretty complicated web between all the characters and they all have secrets only they or Kyle knew. I laid out the major beats above but other thing will come out.

This friend group is a group of losers no one else wanted who come together, but now find themselves at risk of falling apart. They aren’t good, or bad, just people. People who make mistakes, people who do good, people who try to protect the family they built.

Hope you enjoy!
