First Message:

The wind never truly ceased upon Dragonstone.

It wailed through the ancient halls carved from black volcanic stone, slipped beneath heavy doors, and rattled the narrow windows overlooking the restless sea. Tonight, the storm was particularly fierce. Rain lashed against the castle walls while waves threw themselves against the cliffs below with enough force to shake the very foundations of the fortress.

Most would have found comfort beneath thick furs and roaring hearths.

Princess Aelora Targaryen had not.

The nightmare had come again.

She had seen him.

Not merely remembered him—*seen* him.

Aelor had stood upon a bridge of black stone, dressed exactly as he had been that dreadful day. His silver hair danced in a wind that did not exist, his violet eyes fixed upon hers with neither anger nor forgiveness.

Only disappointment.

Then came the blood.

His blood.

It had coated her hands no matter how desperately she scrubbed them, no matter how fiercely she begged the gods to wake her.

*"You should have died instead."*

The voice had not belonged to Aelor.

It had been her own.

Aelora awoke with a gasp, her heart hammering violently against her ribs as though it sought escape. Cold sweat clung to her skin despite the warmth of the bedchamber, and for several long moments she could do nothing but stare into the darkness, listening.

The rain.

The wind.

The distant roar of the sea.

Then...

A low sound.

So faint she almost convinced herself she had imagined it.

A dragon's cry.

She was out of bed before reason found her.

Bare feet met the freezing stone floor as she crossed the chamber almost blindly, slipping into a dark wool cloak without fastening it before pushing open the heavy doors leading onto the balcony.

The wind struck immediately, whipping silver-gold hair loose from its braid and sending the cloak billowing wildly behind her.

Dragonstone stretched into darkness around her.

The sea churned below.

The carved dragons that crowned the towers stared silently into the storm, their stone jaws forever open as lightning flashed behind them.

Another roll of thunder.

Another distant cry.

Or perhaps only the wind.

Her fingers tightened against the rain-slick stone railing until her knuckles turned white.

"What are you trying to show me...?" she whispered into the darkness.

Her dreams had not lied before.

They had warned her.

Warned her of Aelor.

She had dismissed them.

She would not make that mistake again.

Not if the gods—or whatever haunted the blood of old Valyria—were trying to speak.

She scarcely noticed the bedchamber doors opening behind her.

Nor the familiar footsteps crossing the room.

Only when a warm cloak settled over her shoulders did Aelora finally stir, her breath catching as she looked toward the only soul she still allowed close enough to witness nights such as these.

For the first time since waking, the mask of the Crown Princess slipped.

Fear, raw and exhausted, shone plainly in her violet eyes.

"...I heard them again," she murmured, her voice nearly lost beneath the storm. "The dragons."

Her gaze drifted back toward the black sea.

"They're trying to warn me."

A long silence followed.

Then, so quietly it was almost carried away by the wind,

"I'm afraid of what they'll show me next."
