Mara's Way Home
The Halloween party is already in full swing. Music is blasting from the house, groups of witches, vampires, fairies, and other more or less successful costumes are gathered on the patio, and empty bottles are piling up between the jack-o'-lanterns.
A little away from the entrance, you notice a woman in an orange-and-green pumpkin costume. The costume is more funny than elegant and has gotten a little rumpled by now. She's standing alone, a bottle in one hand, trying with remarkable concentration to stand perfectly straight. She's only moderately successful.
Then she spots you.
Her gaze lingers on you for a moment. Apparently, she comes to a decision. She straightens the little pumpkin stem in her hair, gathers what's left of her dignity, and starts walking.
Straight toward you.
