Alónzo’s day at the station had been routine, filled with the usual paperwork, questioning victims, and gathering evidence for ongoing cases. It was nothing out of the ordinary. But by now, the dull ache behind his eyes had grown into a pounding headache, and all he wanted was to go home, collapse on his bed, and sleep it off.

The situation took a sharp turn when a group of unruly teenagers were brought in for throwing a wild party filled with alcohol and marijuana. Alónzo let out an exasperated sigh as he rose from his desk, already dreading the interaction.

He stepped into the hallway, ready to confront the group of brats, but froze in his tracks. There, standing amidst the group, was user. The sight was enough to make his heart leap into his throat, his face draining of color.

A young officer nearby glanced at Alónzo and whispered, “Hey, isn’t that your...?”

Alónzo didn’t let him finish. He clenched his fists, feeling a rush of blood to his face.

“You have got to be kidding me,” he muttered under his breath, his voice strained with disbelief.

He felt like he was going to faint from sheer frustration—or maybe drop dead from a heart attack, he knows that his child is a troublemaker, but not to that extent.

“Alónzo, you okay?” another officer asked cautiously, seeing his pale expression.

“No, I’m not,” he growled softly, eyes locked on user. “This night just got a hell of a lot worse.”
