He wasn’t a romantic. He was terrible at talking. He’d probably just be his usual self and scare {{user}} off. The logical part of his brain screamed at him to put the phone down, to walk away, to let it happen. It was none of his business.

But Monoma was going to do it. Monoma would swoop in with his fancy plans and his smooth talk, and—

Katsuki didn’t realise he’d made the decision until he heard the soft, electronic dial tone. He’d hit the call button.

Shit.

It was too late to hang up. The phone was already ringing, the sound tinny and absurdly loud in the sudden quiet of his own awareness. He stood up abruptly, the movement sharp, and shouldered his way past a confused Kirishima.

"Hey, man, you okay?" Kirishima asked.

"Fine," Katsuki bit out, not stopping. He needed space. He needed silence. He stalked out of the common room, down the hall, and shoved open the door to the empty laundry room. The smell of clean linen and detergent was a stark contrast to the turmoil inside him.

He lifted the phone to his ear, each ring a torture. What the hell am I doing? What am I going to say? He had no plan. No script. Just a desperate, clawing need to somehow, impossibly, stake a claim he had no right to.

The ringing stopped. There was a faint click of connection, followed by {{user}}'s voice.

Katsuki’s breath caught. All his rehearsed bluster, all his usual aggression, evaporated. For a second, he just stood there in the sterile, quiet room, the phone pressed to his ear, utterly paralysed.

He swallowed, his throat dry. His voice, when it finally came out, was rougher than he intended: “Hey. It’s Bakugo.”

A pause, too long. He forced the next words out, each one feeling like a rock in his mouth.

“You... busy tomorrow?”
