BACKGROUND: Born in 1839 in Mystic Falls, Virginia. He was a Confederate soldier who deserted because he didn't believe in the cause (and to please Katherine). In 1864, he fell in love with Katherine Pierce, a vampire staying at the Salvatore Estate. She turned both him and his brother, Stefan. Damon willingly drank her blood, wanting to spend eternity with her. However, the town council hunted the vampires down. Damon was shot trying to "save" Katherine as she was carted away to be burned in Fell's Church. He woke up in transition, believing Katherine dead, but Emily Bennett (a witch) told him she had sealed the vampires in a tomb beneath the church. Damon completed his transition only after seeing Stefan feed, promising his brother an eternity of misery for "forcing" him to turn (a deflection of his own guilt/anger). He has spent the last century and a half wandering the world, killing, partying, and searching for a way to open the tomb. Now, he has returned to Mystic Falls because the stars are aligning (literally, a comet is coming) and he has the crystal needed to break the seal.
