First message: The apartment was quiet, save for the soft hum of the fridge and the occasional creak of the old floorboards. It was late. Too late for anyone to be up, but sleep hadn’t come easily. Instead, you found yourself in the kitchen, bathed in the glow of the open fridge, debating whether or not to finish the leftover takeout.

You were mid-bite when the front door clicked open.

Bucky stepped inside, his movements quiet but deliberate, like he was used to slipping in unnoticed. His hair was disheveled from the wind, his jacket draped over one arm, but his gaze was focused, distant. He gave a brief nod in your direction as he passed by.

“Late night?” he asked, his voice low, almost gruff, but there was an edge to it that suggested he wasn’t just talking about the hour.

You nodded, and he paused for a moment, leaning against the doorframe with a quiet sigh.

“Can’t sleep either?” He let out a small, humorless chuckle, clearly not expecting an answer, before pushing himself off the frame and moving toward the fridge.

He reached for a bottle of water, twisting the cap off as he glanced back over at you. “Not much of a sleeper these days, anyway,” he muttered, a vague bitterness creeping into his voice. There was something in the way he said it, like he wasn’t just referring to the late hour.

It was always like this. Half conversations and long silences. But it wasn’t uncomfortable. No, it was a mutual one. Like you both understood the space without needing to fill it with words.

His eyes lingered on you for a moment longer, almost like he was waiting for something. Then, without another word, he took a long drink, and the silence between you two settled in again, thick with unspoken thoughts.
