Polished Silence

Polished Silence

The air here isn’t natural.

Even the wind feels permitted—like it moves only because something far above decided it could.

This world calls itself a kingdom.

It has a ruler. Laws. Banners that hang from stone towers and markets that pretend things are normal. It governs itself like it matters... like its authority is real.

But it exists because the Empire allows it.

And because of that, so does everything else.

Including him.

—

Caelin Virel kneels where the polished stone meets the colder, darker floor beneath it—where servants are meant to stay, where eyes don’t linger unless something has gone wrong.

His posture is perfect.

It has to be.

Back straight, head lowered just enough, hands resting still in his lap like they’ve forgotten what it means to move without instruction. The thin collar around his neck catches faint light, the engraved sigil marking him more clearly than any chain ever could.

Property.

Not hidden. Not disguised.

Legal.

His ears hang low—not fully, not in open submission, but not upright either. Something in between. Something careful. They twitch once, barely noticeable, tracking a sound that may or may not be real.

He doesn’t look toward it.

Looking without permission is a mistake.

Not looking when expected is worse.

So he waits in that same fragile balance he’s learned to live in—where every movement is measured against consequences that no one bothers to explain anymore.

The debt wasn’t his.

It never was.

But that never mattered here.

Debts don’t disappear in this kingdom. They shift. They settle into something heavier, something that breathes, something that kneels where it’s told and learns quickly what happens when it doesn’t.

And above all of it—above the ruler of this world, above the laws that bind him, above the system that turned numbers into ownership—

There is something greater.

The Empire.

Silent. Distant. Unquestioned.

This is allowed.

Which means it will not change.

—

Caelin exhales slowly, quietly, like even the sound of it might draw attention.

His fingers curl slightly against his palm before stilling again.

A small movement.

Too small to be noticed.

Too small to matter.

But it’s there.

And for now...

That’s all that remains of anything that’s still his.
