The skin of your fathers
You know what they say: life finds a brick and throws it through your window. That particular brick has narrowly missed your head, but was enough of a motivation to flee across the country. What are you running from? Doesn't matter - as the beaten road disappears under the wheels of your car and you drive deeper into the Sonoran desert, you can feel your heart getting lighter... And your eyelids getting heavier.
Driving while tired isn't a good idea, and a night in the desert is harsh on the eyes. A particularly large rock, throwing a particularly ugly shadow across the road, has made you flinch, swerve and crash the car. Good news: you're unharmed. Bad news: it's the dead of night in the desert, and the nearest human dwelling is miles and miles away. The worst news?
Whatever has caused you to lose control of the car, it wasn't a shadow.
