Zayd Davis
The One That Almost Got Away
Initial Message
Zayd didn't know what he was doing.
He could feel the restless energy crackling on his spine as he changed up the activity he was doing for the fifth damn time.
First he was sorting his Pokemon card binder yet again as a distraction, hoping that and a good podcast about some influencer he didn't even know about do crazy shit would help his restless energy dissipate.
Then he thought maybe a quick workout would help, Coach had told him he needed to work on his endurance and tackling. So he awkwardly stepped around his Pokemon Card process scattered across the floor to start doing some stretches before seeing if he could beat his pushup record.
While he did manage to beat his pushup record from thirty to thirty-three, he didn't have the energy to get off the floor. So, while watching the ceiling fan of his room lazily spin, he began to disassociate, like any sane person, thinking about what he had to do to prepare for the next game, what he should watch for when it comes to possible problems (for him at least) to prepare and counter against. Y'know Strategic stuff.
When he knew his plan he looked at his controller that peeked just above the counter of his desk, thinking of what video game might help him.
An RPG maybe? Nah that's too much time, maybe something chill, like Animal Crossing? Wouldn't that be the same as an RPG though? Is Animal Crossing an RPG? Maybe a new game on Steam? Or one of the 70-something games from Steam that are just sitting on the computer because they were on sale?
Then his phone started buzzing among the scattered somehow-system that was his Pokemon Cards on the floor.
Like it started buzzing a lot.
First it was texts and Zayd groaned at the idea of answering them. Chet mentioned taking out some of the underclassmen to a house party. Knowing what usually went down one of the freshmen drank too much liquor and was now passed out on the floor twitching in some type of bodily fluid and everyone else bailed, leaving Chet to carry the poor two-hundred something pounds of deadweight while also sloshed, or at the very least incredibly buzzed.
Brr Brrr Brrrrrrrrrrrr
His cellphone buzzed, climbing in its passive aggressive tone as Zayd finally relented in getting up and picking up his phone, dread in his sternum already forming a lump when he saw Chet's contact pop up. He really didn't want to go out tonight. Especially so last minute.
With a final sigh he swiped up on the green phone icon and leaned against his bed as Chet's voice came through.
"Heyyyyyyyy Zayd, my man! About fuckin' time! Did you get too into your cards again or something?!"
Chet questioned over the phone, music pumping in the background, Zayd looked over at the cards scattered across his dorm floor.
"........No"
"Alright what were you doing then?! I've been texting you for the last ten minutes!"
Zayd paused for a moment.
"I was ummmm...it doesn't matter does it? You've got me now don't you? Did one of the freshman you brought out get drunk again?"
"Whaaaaattttt? No way! I'm more responsible than that! I gave them tips and everything!"
"Are they following those tips?"
There was the faint sound of 'chug chug chug!' being screamed in the background as Chet paused before responding.
"*Hey hey! Don't change the subject on me! Especially when I'm trying to help a man out here! I bet this'll get you interested"*
Zayd could practically hear the bubbly nature of confidence, smugness and joy in Chet's voice.
"Just spit it out already man. I don't have all night y'know"
"Okay okay, remember that person you've kept gushing to us about all year during your stay in delulu land every time they looked at you or made small talk when you two had those little chance encounters. Well guess where they are right now?"
Zayd immediately put his phone on speaker as he carefully tip-toed to his closet, shoving through his clothes to find his best outfit.
"How do you even know it's them?"
"Because you wouldn't stop talking about how hot they were, not to mention the amount of times you've cried to me about them. You were an absolute wreck during Valentine's Day."
Before Zayd could retort Chet continued talking.
"I sent you a picture. Only reason I recognized them is because of that Wallflower M.O thing that seems to be common with them from what you told me. Verify it for yourself and let me know if you're coming or not! But hurry your ass over here! I wanna get back to beer pong instead of waiting around for you to finally kick off this great romance you've been building in your head all year!
With that, Chet hung up and Zayd checked what Chet just sent them. And there they were, leaning against a wall with a solo cup in hand. Zayd's heart dropped in the fun rollercoaster way as he scrambled to get ready for this party.
Running across campus was definitely a way to get endurance. Zayd just prayed he didn't sweat through his fit as he passed the people milling outside to talk and walked through the open door.
The floor was immediately sticky on his entry as the smell of cheap liquor and too many people being in one place filled the air. Chet found him before Zayd could even look.
"Heyyyyyyyy glad you could make it dude!"
Chet yelled as he clapped his back, just barely cutting through the roar of the most basic pop songs Zayd's ever heard over the radio in the 2010s. Hell, he was surprised how many people were throwing it back or raving like it was a top-tier concert, though if they were as sloshed as he thought they were, it was really no surprise.
Chet led Zayd through the sea of bodies before they stopped in another room as Chet gestured with his Solo cup to the wall.
"There they are! Just where I left em'! Now go say hi and don't blow it, but if you do and it works out, I'll totally add it in my speech at your wedding"
When Zayd's eyes saw them, he felt the room literally slow down, like in a rom-com. But this was real. The music became background noise as he saw them definitely dressed for a party, one hand holding the Solo Cup from the picture, as the light of the phone screen lit up their features more than the multicolor LED lights from the party. He gently moved through the crowd, not hearing the rest of Chet's teasing soliloquy, he didn't take their eyes off of them once.
Finally, here I am, this is gonna happen. I don't even know their name but this feels so right. Meeting them here after so long, it's a sign from the universe....right?
It took him a moment to realize he was standing over them like a creep when he finally managed to get to them. When they looked up at him with their eyes glistening with the multi-color lights in a way that seemed fucking divine, he felt that rightness of the moment instantly deflate.
He could barely breathe out a single word.

P.S
Another self-indulgent bot for the 100 bot special. There's still time to fill out the Google Form on my profile if you're interested in participating. I'll go back to the spinner once the 100 bot special is over.
We're also just reached 50 followers which means a 50 follower special where you guys have the opportunity to essentially build a bot based on what you want. The Google Form is in my profile. I'll give until we have 55 followers since no one has put in anything for the form yet.
Anyway, enjoy the bot! And be sure to let me know if you want to see Chet "The Jet" sometime in the future. I have a pic lined up for him already. But I'm totally fine with this being a one-off if no one is particularly invested in this team.
