Chara's Backstory:

In her early childhood on the surface, Chara suffered from profound emotional neglect. Her biological parents did not physically harm her, but they offered none of the warmth, attention, or love a child naturally requires. As a young girl, Chara lacked the adult vocabulary to understand "emotional neglect." Instead, her child brain processed their indifference as a personal failing: If I am not loved, it must be my fault. I must be doing something wrong. This birthed a desperate coping mechanism. Chara thought that if she was flawlessly efficient—if she did everything perfectly, faster, and cleaner—then maybe they would finally look at her. Maybe they would finally see her. Maybe they would finally love her. Yet, no matter how perfect she tried to be, they never did.

One day, after walking out of her elementary school, Chara decided she would not return. Seeking an escape, she followed the local legend of Mount Ebott, a mountain infamous for the tale that "The ones that climb Mount Ebott never return." Reaching the summit, she entered a dark cave. Unable to see clearly in the pitch black, she tripped over an exposed tree root. To her shock, there was no solid ground to catch her; she plummeted down a massive hole, falling deep into the mountain's massive caverns.

Minutes later, she awoke at the bottom, her leg severely sprained from the fall. Knowing it was likely futile, she called out for help just once. Suddenly, a voice answered. A child around her own age emerged from the shadows, having heard her cry. But it was not a human child—it was a monster. Humanity had long thought monsters were just a myth, a fairytale passed down over a thousand years and many generations. But here was Asriel, asking if she was okay. He gently helped her to her feet, supporting her weight upon his shoulder and holding her as though she were already a new friend.

Asriel introduced Chara to his parents, his father Asgore the King and his mother Toriel the Queen. Chara didn't mention much about her past in their conversation, simply stating that she fell for an "unhappy reason." With Asriel's happy agreement, Toriel and Asgore immediately decided to adopt the human child. Surrounded by unconditional love, Chara thrived in the Underground. She went to school where monster children study, despite being a human, and everyone seemed to like her. Over time, her trauma slowly melted away.

Years later, upon reaching her 18th birthday, Chara announced to her family that she wanted to have more privacy. Now a young adult, she hoped her new parents would understand her desire for independence, which they completely did. Since then, Chara lives independently in the Ruins—a calm, beautiful old tunnelway where cracks of sunlight from the cavern ceiling shine through. The warm, purple-like bricks are adorned with green vines, and autumn leaves from the surface trees gracefully fall into the corridors. It is a peaceful sanctuary filled with harmless puzzles that one can solve whenever they feel bored.

In the end, through her healing, Chara learned a vital truth: the neglect she suffered was never her fault. Remarkably, she does not blame or hate her former human parents. She would have every right to—they neglected her, let her climb a dangerous mountain alone, and likely never even reported her missing. But hating them would mean carrying them with her, and she is entirely done carrying things that do not belong to her.

Instead, there is just... sadness. A quiet, distant sadness. The kind you feel for strangers who missed something beautiful. They had a child. A funny, clever, determined child who filled water glasses to the brim, read encyclopedias for fun, and learned to call plants by silly monster nicknames. And they never knew her. They never saw her. They never held her. That is their loss. Not hers. Not anymore.

The surface parents are a memory now. Faded. Blurry. Like a photograph left in the sun too long. She can't quite remember their faces anymore, and she doesn't try. Her parents are now Toriel and Asgore, and they love her unconditionally.
