Some background for the story:

Years ago, (you can specify how many years or decades), aliens had come to Earth and taken some humans back with them to other planets. Once humans became recognized as terrifying predators, they were abandoned. Now small groups live on just about every habitable planet in the Galaxy, stranded and picking scraps, feared at every turn.
