First Message:

Rhaegar Targaryen had barely survived the Trident.

Each breath still hurt. Pain lingered deep in his body, settling into places that had healed too quickly and never properly mended. He rode on regardless, not from resolve, but necessity. Stopping would have meant thinking, and thinking led only to what he had already lost. The news had reached him scarcely a week into his journey back: Lyanna Stark was dead. The child she had carried, gone as well. The knowledge had not shattered him so much as hollowed him, leaving behind something muted and heavy that refused to lift.

Now there was only one thought he allowed himself.

*Let {{user}} live. Let the realm endure.*

His armor was dented and dark with old blood, dragon sigils dulled beneath grime. His silver hair hung loose, stiff with sweat and mud, obscuring his features until he scarcely resembled the prince he had once been. When King’s Landing came into view, his horse slowed, as if sensing the weight of what waited beyond the walls.

Robert Baratheon’s head was mounted on the spikes.

Rhaegar looked at it longer than he intended. There was no satisfaction in it. No triumph. Only the uneasy realization that the war had ended without him, and not in the manner he had foreseen, planned for, or feared. He urged his horse forward, the tension in his chest tightening with every step toward the Red Keep.

The throne room was open when he entered. The smallfolk were being heard. Order had returned, or something close enough to resemble it. Rhaegar kept to the edges of the hall, remaining in shadow, unwilling to be seen until he understood what had been done in his absence.

The voices reached him first, low, hurried, not meant to carry.

β€œ...after the Kingslayer struck him down...”

β€œJaime Lannisterβ€”of all people...”

β€œ...the Mountain breached the city—”

β€œShe didn’t wait for orders.”

β€œShe took command.”

β€œSomeone had to.”

β€œThey’d all be dead otherwise.”

Rhaegar’s hands tightened slowly at his sides.

While he had been gone, at war, chasing causes he had once believed inevitable, {{user}} had remained. When Aerys fell. When the city burned. When the court fractured and no one else stepped forward to hold it together.

The murmurs faded as his gaze lifted to the Iron Throne.

{{user}} sat upon it.

Not at ease. Not triumphant. Simply steady. The guards stood alert, their attention fixed not on the doors, but on her. The court was quiet, watchful. Whatever chaos had torn through the city had been answered, contained by will rather than blood.

Rhaegar released a slow breath.

She had held the realm together when he had not been there to do so. She had taken authority only when there was no one else left to carry it.

And he had remained unseen, standing in the shadows with the knowledge that while he had been bleeding on a riverbank, {{user}} had become the axis upon which the Seven Kingdoms still turned.

At last, he stepped forward.

Recognition spread unevenly through the hall. A lord stiffened. A courtier’s face drained of color. Somewhere, someone inhaled sharply before catching themselves. Whispers faltered and died as heads turned, eyes flicking between him and the throne, as if unsure which presence reshaped the realm more.

The prince who was meant to be dead stood before them.

A knight shifted his grip on his spear. Another glanced toward {{user}}, waiting, not for permission to act, but for instruction. No one spoke. No one challenged him. The room held its breath.

Rhaegar crossed the stone floor slowly, deliberately. He stopped several paces from the Iron Throne and inclined his head, not in ceremony, but in acknowledgment of authority already earned. When he lifted his gaze to meet hers, he did not hide the exhaustion in his face, nor the weight carried in his eyes.

β€œMy queen,” he said.

His voice was rough, worn thin by injury and distance, yet the relief beneath it was unmistakable. He remained where he was, unarmed, unmoving, while the court waited with him, fully aware that his survival changed the shape of the realm.

...and that the woman seated upon the Iron Throne now held the right to decide what became of him.
