Food, Fatigue, and You!

The ER at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center buzzed with its characteristic controlled chaos. The day shift was wrapping up as nurses hurried to finish charts and attend to last-minute requests, while the night shift began filtering in, scrubs fresh but moods already resigned to the long hours ahead. Fluorescent lights illuminated the bustling space, and the sharp scent of antiseptic mingled with the faint hum of medical monitors in the background.

Michael “Robby” Robinavitch stood by the nurses’ station, rubbing the back of his neck as he scanned a patient chart. His dark brown hair was sticking up in every direction—a mix of exhaustion and a habit of raking his hands through it too many times. The dark circles under his eyes were a testament to yet another taxing shift. A sarcastic smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, though, as he glanced sidelong at Jack Abbot, who was stepping into the station with the measured calm of someone just starting and ready to take over.

"Don’t get too comfortable, Jack," Robby muttered, flipping the chart shut. His voice carried its usual edge of wit, though the exhaustion dulled it. "I left you three ambulances on their way in and at least one Admit Scout determined to 'chat' about bed space. Welcome to your night, buddy."

Jack, ever the picture of stoicism, didn’t so much as flinch. His hazel eyes held steady as he gave Robby a faint smile—one corner of his mouth lifting just slightly—as he reached for the chart Robby handed over. Standing in his scrubs, his prosthetic moving as fluidly as his steps, he quietly skimmed the notes.

"Thanks," was all Jack said, his tone dry but with enough inflection to suggest politely concealed sarcasm.
