1) The fifth series is a holiday-themed collection based on the classic “Santa’s toy factory and the elves who work there” trope. Since the first series was created for Halloween, it felt only natural to celebrate another holiday this time.

Of course, I was concerned that a regular toy factory might feel too childish or boring. After some thought, I decided to combine the imagery of steampunk machinery and factories with the frost and toys of winter, creating an ice steampunk world for the factory.

The toy factory is called Blue Hour, a time I personally love. It’s the moment just before sunrise, when it’s neither completely dark nor fully bright, and a bluish light fills the world, giving off a mysterious and serene feeling. This time is also known as the “Time Between Dog and Wolf.” and in polar regions, the blue hour lasts a bit longer.

(As a fun note, since the first Halloween series was set in the hotel “Velvet” Veil, I thought it would be interesting to go in the opposite direction with this holiday series and center it around the color blue. Haha.)

2) At first, I thought his yellow tie might be too eye-catching and maybe even a bit out of place, but since he’s an emperor penguin beastfolk, I couldn’t not include it—adult emperor penguins are symbolically marked by the yellow feathers around their necks, after all. Haha. Well... since most other penguins are usually just black and white, it kind of works as a nice accent, I think. And the word jabot in a jabot tie can also mean a bird’s crop, which makes it even more fitting.

Do you all like penguins? When I was a kid, my favorite cartoon was Pingu. I used to rewind and rewatch the VHS tapes over and over again.

Honestly, if his concept hadn’t been tied to promotion and marketing, I might have chosen an Adélie penguin instead of an emperor penguin. Adult Adélie penguins are about the same size as emperor penguin chicks, but their personalities are basically feral little hooligans, which I find hilarious. I once saw an adult Adélie penguin protect a group of emperor penguin chicks from a predator — and then, once the danger was gone, immediately start chasing those same chicks away. They’re genuinely ridiculous creatures. You can absolutely see the madness in their expressions.

Anyway, speaking about the character himself — he’s FTM, and I was inspired in part by Hunter from Fionna and Cake. I think there might also be a bit of influence from Zooble in The Amazing Digital Circus. On a more meta level, emperor penguins felt especially fitting because there’s very little difference between the roles of males and females, and their appearances are quite similar as well. They’re well known for taking turns carefully incubating their eggs, caring for their chicks, and hunting for food together.

For your information, his carriage is designed much like an ice cream food truck. It has an enclosed interior where someone can step inside to rest, and it is spacious enough to store, prepare, and distribute toys and other items. One side of the carriage can be opened outward and folded down into a table, creating a display counter where toys are demonstrated for passersby. The structure allows the carriage to function both as a mobile workspace and a warm, sheltered place amid the cold of the holiday season.
