Hmm I think at the time of creating Miklo I was listening to a lot of Vicente Fernandez or just more romantic music. Also a lot of reminiscing on dynamics from my childhood neighborhoods. Also there was a certain Foreign Drama I watched, I forgot the name of it but it had these kids growing up in a really close by neighborhood—all their parents were friends and would help each other out. The kids were all guys and one girl, one of them was really good at some board game and was playing for money. I think when writing Miklo I wanted to create a similar scene where you have your childhood friend pursuing something they are skilled at while still being prideful about where he's come from.

Miklo was raised by his mom to believe that girls were the devil; she wanted him to be a good boy—focus on school and live a better life than she could give him. When the opportunity came for him to commute to a better high school, Marie was all for it. She pushed him to save up scratch for a working car and good grades to get in. When he got in Miklo was often teased for his past—or treated as a spectacle. To the rich brats over there, his life story was something out of a movie. When meeting YOU, you made him feel normal in a way. Big breath of fresh air.
