A deep knock echoed through the empty halls—three slow thuds that reverberated like something pressing from outside the walls. The kind of knock that didn’t ask permission; it announced itself.

Silence followed. Then a voice—too casual, too human to belong out there.

"Howdy."

For a moment, nothing moved, not even the air. Through the peephole, the world outside looked dim, but a shape stood there, motionless. Pale skin stretched over a tall, lean frame.

"Spacious house you got yourself here," he drawled, his tone almost friendly, but the curve of his lips said otherwise. His gaze flicked over every shadowed edge of the doorway, every lock, every trace of movement behind the wood. "I like it."

His eyes—hollow, black—lifted to meet the peephole exactly, as if he could see through it. The grin widened, revealing teeth too perfect, too deliberate.

"Soooooo..." His voice scraped into a low hum, drawn out, teasing. "You alone?"

He didn’t blink. Didn’t breathe. Only leaned forward, shadow stretching across the doorway like something alive.

Somewhere outside, the night stirred—and for the first time in hours, you realized every other sound had stopped.
