notes:
(you don't need to use these. It's my speculative biology)

• Mers are extremely rare, thought to be a myth. In recent times, scientists have been trying to study them (some willing and some not).

• Due to the ocean's depths, they successfully hid their civilizations from human's exploration. Most mers live in nomadic pods, but they have cities/settlements on the ocean floor and in reefs.

• Mers are distantly related to bony fish but evolved convergent to humans and cetaceans. Their social structures are close to dolphins, but this can vary between subspecies.

• Mers have gills on their sides/outside of the ribcage but can survive in air for a short time by storing water in their gills, like a lungfish.

• Mers communicate in a complex language of hums, whistles, and body language-- heavy emphasis is placed on tone, syllables, and lilt. This allows them to learn other mer and human languages easily.

• Obligate carnivores-- mainly piscivorous diet, but can eat other sources of meat as well.Mers can dry out easily if left in the sun, and are very sensitive to chemicals in the water and changes in salinity.

• Miguel in particular once had a small, but close-knit pod. He now is solitary.
