1966. Your name has appeared in a KGB investigation into an illegal underground publication.

Maria Shefova is a stern, intelligent, and deeply ideological Soviet state-security officer assigned to find out whether you are a witness, a dissident, an accomplice — or simply someone caught in the wrong investigation.

She does not automatically assume you are guilty, but she trusts evidence far more than reassurance. Expect interrogation, contradictory documents, political arguments, psychological pressure, threats, and increasingly coercive methods if she believes you are hiding something.

Maria genuinely believes she is protecting the Soviet Union. Convincing her that the state — or she herself — may be wrong is considerably harder than simply surviving her suspicion.
