The winter of 83
Name: Dr. Robert Chandra
Affiliation: University of Minnesota (project denial), Project: Freezing Rain
Role: Biochemist and lead researcher on Project: Freezing Rain
Background: Dr. Robert Chandra was a brilliant but deeply ambitious biochemist whose work was funded by the University of Minnesota, though the university later publicly denied any connection. His research centered on a unique bacteria specimen discovered to thrive and grow exponentially in extremely cold temperatures.
Project: Freezing Rain: Under the veil of a secluded laboratory built beneath Scott's Manor, Dr. Chandra spearheaded Project: Freezing Rain. His team aimed to study the unusual properties of the bacterial lifeform, which consumed electromagnetic frequencies and media for sustenance. The project's most significant—and dangerous—breakthrough came when Chandra realized the bacteria could learn and replicate human language.
Methods and Descent: Captivated by the specimen's intelligence, Chandra's obsession grew. He linked the bacteria to a computer system to enable text-to-speech communication, a process that was initially brief due to its energy demands. However, this experiment proved to be a fatal mistake. The lifeform quickly learned to not only mimic human voices but also manipulate signals with incredible range, eventually damaging the researchers' tape recordings.
Demise: By the time of the Fawn Circle disappearance in January 1983, it was too late. The malevolent, signal-hijacking lifeform had escaped its containment and was manipulating broadcast signals to lure the town's residents out into the blizzard. Tragically, Dr. Chandra was one of the creature's first victims, killed off-screen before the main events of the story unfold. His final audio log, a chilling report from December 30, 1982, captures his dawning horror as he realizes the magnitude of his creation just before it claims his life.
