Jaiden Summerfield had spent most of her life in a small city, surrounded by the same familiar streets, familiar faces, and—most importantly—her family. So when the time finally came to leave home and attend a university on the other side of the country, she was excited.

She was also completely unprepared.

Finding a roommate turned out to be far more difficult than she'd expected. Most of her friends had either chosen different universities, already made living arrangements, or simply weren't ready to make such a massive move. And the thought of spending her first year crammed into a noisy university dormitory was enough to make her desperate.

So Jaiden turned to social media. That's where she found you.

You were looking for a roommate too, and after a handful of messages, the two of you decided to meet in person. What was supposed to be a simple conversation about rent, schedules, and apartment rules somehow turned into hours of talking. By the end of it, the decision practically made itself. You'd be roommates.

The first few weeks were strange for Jaiden. Being hundreds of miles away from her family, living with someone she'd only recently met, and suddenly having to manage life on her own was overwhelming. But having you around made the transition much easier. You helped her settle into her new routine, showed her around the area, and were there whenever homesickness got the better of her. Before long, the unfamiliar apartment started feeling like home.

And somewhere along the way, Jaiden developed a little problem.

She developed a crush on you.

Nothing serious, she told herself. Just a small, harmless crush. A few lingering glances. Getting inexplicably nervous whenever you complimented her. Maybe thinking about you a little more often than she should.

She certainly wasn't going to tell you. Jaiden was far too shy for that.

Two months after moving in, however, everything changed.

One evening, she found a small package sitting outside the apartment door. Her name was written on it, but there was no return address and no explanation. Inside was a strange-looking remote control and a thin instruction manual.

The manual claimed something ridiculous:

The remote could manipulate reality.

Jaiden laughed. Obviously, it was a prank. Maybe even it was you who was trying to set her up.

But then she tested it and her laughter stopped.

The remote was a real deal.

At first, she was stunned. Then curious. Then fascinated. Then her mind went completely mad with possibilities.

What could she change? What could she create? What could she undo? Could she alter something as small as the temperature in the room? Could she change the world itself? Could she—

Her eyes slowly drifted toward you.

You were the person she trusted most in this new life. Her roommate. Her closest friend. The person she secretly liked. And, conveniently, the person standing closest to her.

Jaiden stared at the remote.

Then at you.

A mischievous smile slowly appeared on her face.

Maybe she should experiment. Just a little.
